Make-up help?

Does anyone know a good natural-looking kind of make up? I don't wear it much, and my FI isn't that big a fan of the stuff, but I'd like to wear something on our wedding day for the pictures. You know, to even out my skin a little bit? I don't know much about this stuff, so any suggestions/advice would be appreciated.

Re: Make-up help?

  • I think my Mary Kay looks really natural (I use liquid and powder when I use it). Bare Minerals is a good natural looking one too, though apparantly everyone says it shows up in pics?

  • I've heard of Bare Minerals. I think they had commercials for it on the tv or something. Stupid Q but why would it show up in pictures?

  • I used sell MK years ago but switched to Bare Minerals because it was far kinder to my skin.  I've never had it show up in pictures.  I do have to use a good moisturizer before I apply or my face will feel a bit tight and dry.  I love that it takes little effort and that it lasts so long.  One container of foundation lasts me at least 6 months.  I wear make up 4-5 days a week.  I suggest going to a place like Ulta and trying it out.  They will teach you how to use it.

  • You have to be careful with that stuff for weddings because it tends to reflect on camera (mineral make-up, that is).

CAB would be our resident expert on what to wear or not wear, especially when photographed (which differs greatly from day-to-day).

For day-to-day makeup, the most natural makeup I've found is Trish McEvoy, which is a line sold at Nordstrom.  If you go in, they'll show you how to apply it and you can buy whichever products you want.

Honestly, though, for the amount you'll spend to buy products, if you aren't going to use them again you might just want to hire a makeup artist to do your makeup the day of the wedding.  Check out your local board to get recommendations for affordable makeup artists.  Airbrush is favored by a lot of people who don't like makeup since it looks really natural and doesn't feel heavy or stiff or flaky.

  • Bare Minerals does not show up in pictures (Tiddly, she means it makes your face look "white" because the flash "picks up" the talc in powder, but BM does not have talc...)

Anyway, look at my wedding pictures:

That is Bare Minerals. No issues.

Binx you never EVER listen to me! ;)
  • iluvmytxgr: we have an Ulta close by here...i had thought about going there to try it out.

calindi: i hadn't thought of getting my make up done, actually. Something to think about. Thanks.

Oooooh I see. Your make up looks amazing lol. It's not that I don't like make up, I just don't know much about the stuff, so I've never messed with it too much.

Thank you. It's heavy, but that's cause I am a makeup hoar. If you wore this BM with no liquid foundation underneath (maybe just a tinted moisturizer), it wouldn't look as heavy.

I strongly suggest getting some makeup trials done, and getting someone to do it for you. Don't waste your money on stuff you're not going to use later. It can get pricey
  • Thanks for the advice CAB :)

  • I love Bare Minerals.  That has been my makeup of choice for years now.
  • I'm with PP who suggested just getting it done, day of. I never wear face makeup and didn't really have a clue where to start, nor would I really use it again that often after I'd invested in all of it. I had a great experience with my make up artist and we even did a trial when I had my hair trial.

  • I also suggest hiring someone and getting it done by them. I like make up but I wouldn't do it for myself on such a big day especially since MUAs know tricks on how to look.flawless for cameras. Just IMO. For everyday natural looking products though, I swear by BB creams. Cab just started using it. Its great and you always look natural.

They're amazzzinngggg. And yes, I look much more natural (when I am not wearing red lipstick, anyway ;) )
  • I'm sorry CAB! I don't ever recll you saying that! I've just heard from other people about the camera lighting w/ BMs.

I talked about this in one of the rants threads maybe a couple of months ago. I heart ya, I was just messing with you! :)

  • I third (or fourth) the make-up artist suggestion if you can afford it. I have a degree in technical theater concentrating in wigs and make-up and will not be doing my own make-up for the wedding. Part of it is that what I was trained to do is pretty far off from looking like normal, or even glamorous make-up, but the other part is that I'm pretty sure I won't be able to have as sure of a hand as I would like. But CAB did an amazing job with hers, so I think it's all about having an idea of how you'll feel and what you'll be capable of.

I also rarely wear every day make-up besides some concealer, one coat of mascara and maybe, maybe lipstick. And I only put that on about twice a week. I do "dress up"| make-up about once a month, maybe. And I own entirely too much make-up. I'll also have a hairstylist (because I'm horribly bad at my own hair, except I do dye it myself) adn I'll get my nails done, even though I almost always do my own and have an exceptional amount of nail polish. I think I just prefer to outsource to professionals for that day.

  • I wish I had good makeup artists in my area. But I don't so I'm doing mine myself lol
  • I second the Bare Minerals.  I've been using them for years now.  My mom turned me on to them, and they're amazing.  But I heard that their mineral veil shows up on camera.  Don't know if there's any truth to it but personally I've never taken that risk.
  • I really have no problem investing in some good make up products if it's something that I can do quickly and that will look natural and not like I have a gallon of the stuff on my face, which is a look that my FI really does not go for, and also isn't very me. I just don't know what's good and what isn't. I occasionally do wear it, so I'm down with the basics of application, it's just knowing what works and what doesn't that I'm a little slow with.

Like my sister wears make up, but it always looks so fussy and it takes her forever to put it all on. That's not for me at all.
