Maui DJ or iPod??

Who did you guys use or plan to use? We have pretty much decided to do everything at Olowalu instead of just the ceremony (EEEEEEEEK!!!) and now I'm looking into the entertainment portion of things. Our group will be under 40 (I hope).

Please share your packages, prices, and reviews...thanks so much in advance :)

We are just adding the Bose System and bringing my Ipod with a back up just in case. There will only be about 2 hours for dancing time and we really could not justify spending the money on a DJ.

We paid for a DJ and had him do everything...music pre-ceremony, ceremony music & mics, cocktail music, MC, dinner music, and dancing.  The total service was about 6.5 hours and we paid under $1000.  At first I wanted to do an ipod reception, but I wanted to be sure people could hear the ceremony, that none of us had to worry about switching playlists, etc and renting speakers on our own was $300-500 anyway, AND we'd have to move them around.  I have no regrets at all, and our DJ ROCKED.  We booked our DJ really late, and when we were meeting with the ones we interviewed, they were all very willing to lower their rates if they were still open -- better to make something than nothing I guess?

Kaesha did an iPod only day, and things went off without a hitch.  You may want to get her take on specifics!

    Tanq who was your DJ?
  • edited December 2011
Dan Viola -- aka DJ Dan.  He was a great fit for us.  Definitely a professional DJ as opposed to a club DJ that does weddings, if that makes sense.  He was a godsend and took so much off our shoulders during the last week and on the day of.  Let me know if you need any contact info!

Yes Tanq if you could send me his info that would be great. We are open to anything at this point and since we havent made a decision on having a live ceremony musician it would be great to know our options!

My rec is for a DJ as well...one less thing to worry about if something goes wrong with the ipod and they can also MC. We're using DJ Boomshot...my WC's rec plus AK used him last month as well. I cannot remember if she posted a full vendor review or not but i believe she really liked him...he read the crowd really well and did not play anything off of their no play list. Hopefully she'll chime in or you can PM her. HTH! J. :-)

Oh great news that you will now be having your wedding and reception at olowalu. Initially, we were going simple with beach wedding then dinner at a resto, then maybe beach house and resto...similar to what you were initially going to do... then all at a resort and finally everything at olowalu. Since you have your venue on lock then you can use your scouting trip to interview vendors and relax some. :-)

I wanted an iPod DJ as well, but my FI was totally opposed to it, so we're going with a DJ.

It was definitely hard for me to imagine smooth transitions with an iPod DJ, but if you're able to make it work, go for it! I saw a video of a horrible iPod DJ experience at a wedding and it was...not good!

Anyway, those are my thoughts. I would go with one if I had someone sittin there and manning it, but then you have to thinking about the MC and how things would just transition.

Sorry for the weird formatting, don't want him to get all sorts of spam.  He's fabulous if you just want someone really professional, capable, and experienced.  He's not your hipster kind of DJ if that makes any sense, which I know isn't everyon'e style.  He had no issues keeping everyone on the dance floor though!

He sounds great! We are still hoping to keep things casual  but upbeat if the guests are in the mood to party once the drinks start flowing. Also we will probably only have our coordinator for the cermony so an MC would keep us on track for the rest of the vening. Thanks Tanq!

Thanks Moto! I must say you girls rock on here. It's such a useful tool to be able to ask questions and get first hand answers. We are doing a tasting with Tina from Food For The Soul on our scouting trip and we are so excited. She is such a sweet person!! I really look forward to hearing all about your big day.

What did you guys decide to do for lighting? Our group will be under 40 so we are thinking of only doing 1 string of lanterns, a few uplights on the tree, and a bunch of tiki torches.

Oh yay! Scouting trips! We were already planning on going to Maui before we were engaged, and luckily my FI proposed well before our trip so we could do some scouting while we are there! I'll be on Maui in 2 weeks! So I'll be checking out Olowalu, having a couple cake tastings, and meeting up with potential vendors! :) I'll be sure to post some reviews when I get back! Woohoo!

  • Hi Tiggy!! I was wondering who you went with for DJ? How much did it cost and was it worth it?
