Dress style selection in salons

I'm extremely disappointed and frustrated by the fact that the the majority of dresses out there for brides are STRAPLESS! I think the dresses are pretty, but strapless is not flattering on me and I do not want to be uncomfortable and self-conscious on my wedding day.  All of the salons say that something can be added so it isn't totally strapless, but it isn't the same to me.  I found a few styles online that I love and would love to try on, but nobody carries more than a "few" v-neck a-line dresses.  Why??? I know there are more brides out there like me who do not want to stick with the standard strapless dress! I don't wear strapless in my social life so why, why, why would I want it on my wedding day????  I wish there was more of a selection out there that wasn't so cookie-cutter strapless.  It is very frustrating and annoying that we're all expected to look basically the same.  Maybe if they stocked more of these dresses, they would see there is a demand for it.  I refuse to settle on a strapless dress because that's all there is out there to offer me.  Anyone else out there feeling this??

  • Have you considered having your dress made?

I also wanted something different for my dress (albeit, I did want strapless).  I wanted my dress to be seersucker.  I ended up having it made because there was no selection.  Be the change you want to see in the dress market!
  • I'm like you.  I did NOT want a strapless dress AT ALL.  They simply aren't flattering on my figure, and I have a surgery scar on my left shoulder/armpit area that I like to keep covered.

I went to three salons to try on dresses, and I think each salon had maybe 8-10 non-strapless styles in my price range.  I found quite a few that I liked, and one that I absolutely fell in love with (Watters Harmony -- pic in my bio).   It actually made dress-shopping slightly more manageable because there were fewer options and I wasn't as overwhelmed.

Plus, after the Royal wedding, there are a TON of lace/illusion sleeve styles and non-strapless styles being introduced.

  • I felt the same way, that's why I ordered my dress online and not at a bridal shop. Good luck!! You will find something you LOVE. :)
  • can you afford to wait a bit?  The trend is shifting back to sleeves/straps, etc, so i'm sure within the next 6 months or so, there will be lots more of those types of dresses in stock.

A lot of times straps or sleeves can be added to certain style dresses.
Also, look online and see if some of those designers are carried in stores nearby.  A lot of times, if the brand is carried, they can request to have a sample shipped to the store for you to try =)
