QOTD

Not so much of a question as a discussion.

Bin Laden is dead and the country broke out in celebration last night.  What are your thoughts?

I'm a bit uncomfortable over celebrating the death of anyone. But I suppose it brings a sense of closure and relief to the country.

I can't muster a lot of enthusiasm to celebrate someone's death, regardless of that person's actions. Perhaps his death was inevitable, perhaps not, but I tend to agree more with those who say that violence begets more violence. I don't know all the details yet, but I would have rather seen him taken alive and tried for his crimes if at all possible. I'm also not a fan of the whole concept of a so-called 'war on terror' - it bugs me that Obama continued some of the rhetoric of the Bush era.

I'm not religious at all, but for those who follow Judeo-Christian religious traditions, I will leave you with this thought (posted on Facebook by a friend of mine who's training to become a priest):

‎"Do not rejoice when your enemies fall, and do not let your heart be glad when they stumble." - Proverbs 24:17

Yesterday, was my one year anniversary and while in the midst of celebrating at home last night, I saw that Obama was going to speak about something. We turned on the television and were in shock. It really changed the mood of the evening for us.

So, my first reaction was shock and my second reaction was that this was a great thing for Obama.

I might get everyone's panties in a bunch, but I am a little skeptical about the whole situation. It just happened so fast and there isn't any hard evidence that really shows that he's dead. And they just dumped his body in the ocean so quickly? I'm sure he's dead, but something just seems a little fishy to me.

With that said I am slightly uncomfortable that people were out celebrating someone's death whether they were evil or not.
Along with Proverbs 24:17, I've seen this posted too:
”I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”

I did not celebrate his death but rather celebrated the lives of all that were lost on September 11th.  This was closure for a lot of families that lost loved ones due to this mans actions.  I cannot say that I am sad that he is no longer here on earth but I am never happy to hear someone has lost their life because, after all, they were someone's child.
