XP: So would you {Sloane...I saw your answer...hehe}

I posted this over on the SB board but I want to see your responses here:

So would you be mad if you found out that your SIL tried on your ring before you got it? I am just curious because last night at my cousins wedding her SIL was giving her speech and mentioned this and....A lot of the women were all OMG!! and I was kinda like Meh? I mean that's not something I think she should have admitted but....not the worst thing that someone could say...

Can't give you the fiancee's outlook on it but when I was shopping for her ring I asked the sales people in the store to try on what I was looking at if they had a finger it would fit on, and if I had a sister (only child)  I'd probably have asked her to go shopping with me and asked her to try it on; it's hard to get an idea of what something actually looks like on a woman's hand when you're just holding it in front of you.  I'm guessing a lot more guys have someone else try the ring on most brides to be think. :)

I don't think it would bother me, but I also think I was much more of a relaxed bride. Little things that some people obsess over or think that are important were never a concern for me.

  • edited December 2011
What was the cirumstance? Was she trying to help the groom out by picking the ring or did she just try it on? Was she wearing it around?

Honestly, I feel like Meh, not a big deal.

This is also one of the reasons I avoid my wedding month board. I'm sure most of them are very decent people but I simply can't get on board with worrying about the details that most of them seem to be obsessing over!

Haha! Ok this was the situation.... Apparently the FI had the ring shipped to his parents house (He was at school) and when it was delivered he asked his sister to open it....She opened it and then apparently tried it on. My things was Meh? She probably should have left the story out of her speech but other than that no biggie IMO.

I saw the other post stinker, and it reminded me about a time RIGHT after I was engaged when a girl I barely know asked if she could try on my ring. We were at a restaurant talking about the engagement and she just said, "Can I try on your ring?"

I was just in shock. I looked at her and she could tell I was uncomfortable. So she laughed it off, but I know if she would have tried it on if I was ok with it.

Can't work up the energy to get upset about something this little. I mean it is not like the SIL wore it around for days. She tried it on,  Agree SIL should have been a little more tactful about saying it in her speech.

Well the Bride had a look of shock for a sec (prob just because of it being said in the speech) and seemed to move on. Now some of the older women in the group....did not. lol.

Oh and to answer the question.  I would think it would be weird is she was going around wearing it like it was hers but all other reasons, shopping, to see how it looks on the finer, etc seem reasonable to me.  I'd be more horrified to learn it was someone elses ring first.

Um.. I don't get along with my FSIL, so yes, I think I would have a problem with her wearing my ring before me.  However, I have had people try on my ring and it didn't bother me.

  • edited December 2011
I don't think that would bother me although it may not be the top choice of stories I'd want mentioned in a toast, lol ; - )  DH works with a lot of women and I know he showed my ring around the office the day he picked it up so I know a bunch of ladies saw it before me -- I don't think anyone tried it on though.

I'm with Keana, I couldn't care less.  Yes, mentioning it in the speech was lame, but in the end I wouldn't give 2 shiits because after all she didn't get to keep the ring  :)
Before I broke my engagement ring I had a lady ask me to try it on and I told her a flat out no, but in all fairness I wouldn't let anyone randomly try on any of my other jewelry either.

I also agree about posting on the wedding months and other boards. I can't seem to really connect with anyone like I do here.  I like lurking over on E and SB but a lot of those chicks are way too much drama!

    Yes indeed she did!
And I had only had the ring for maybe two weeks at the time.  I was flabbergasted, but should have expected it from her (she has major boundary issues).  I didn't want to say No since my relationship with her is awkward (due to her social stuntedness) so I deferred to FI, thinking he'd be on the same wavelength as me.  Nope.  So I reluctantly let her try it on and after that I thought that we might be jinxed (I am a tad superstitiuous at times).  In hindsight it's a bit silly to think that.  But I really wish she wouldn't have asked!  Ugh.

I would have to say yes, I'd be peeved, but that's more particular to the person rather than the act of someone else trying on my ring.  For instance, if FMIL asked, I'd probably be rushing it off to help get it on her finger. But I don't have the same feelings for FSIL (for a number of reasons).  But maybe I need to get my attitude right...I lost my engagement ring last summer and maybe it was my comeuppance for these latent hostile feelings. Undecided

That is a really good question and I honestly think I could go either way!!

Her tone in the speech would be one thing. If it sounded like a snotty "i got to wear it first HAHA" kinda thing...I would beat her down *giggle* but if it was a casual funny kinda story than I would be like meh...

Also...do I like her?? If I already hate her, then we have issues... I am an only child and I dont quite understand a lot of cibling relationships but lucky for me Jason's sister is awesome ...so I dont think I would care either way if she had a say in the picking out of the ring or even if she wore it for a week! It ended up on my finger and thats all that matters ^_^

I think its an awkward speech, but not a huge issue.
After I finally got my ring, it was at the jewelers for months after I picked it out, several of my gf's asked to try it on.  I didn't think twice about that. (they are all married anyway) but i would probably think it was weird if a complete stranger asked me.
