hello loveshine:

thank you for answering my question. however, please note that the title of my post is "makeup stores." this was intended to rank stores that specialize in or focus on makeup. department stores, by their very name, carry makeup in one of their many departments, while generally selling other wares such as clothing and shoes (also in separate departments).

granted, the argument could be made that garage sales also fall into this category, but everyone knows that you go to garage sales specifically for makeup, even though they carry other things such as stolen clothing from baby gap or stolen jumperoos from kohls.

I've never heard of Ulta until I started reading this board. We only have two stores in our area - 40 miles apart. Is it just makeup or beauty supplies...?

I'm not sure what qualifies as "beauty supplies," but Ulta has tons of drugstore makeup (cover girl, noxzema, etc.) and big name makeup (stila, smashbox, urban decay, etc) as well as tons of skincare products (high and low end), haircare products (shampoo/conditioner/gel/hairspray/hair color) and the like. Also perfume. LOTS of perfume. And things like makeup brushes, hair curlers, blow dryers, etc.</div><div>

We're finally getting a Ulta! Woohoo, my little city is moving up having both Sephora and Ulta.

I'll be going to Sallys to get wash out dye for DH's beard for costume wedding and Halloween.

I've never been to an Ulta, and the last time I was at a Sally was more than 10 years ago.

I am glad someone else likes the BE stand-alone store! That place fascinates me. I wish my face looked better all colorful, just so I could buy and wear everything there.

I think Ulta has stepped up their game because of Sephora. I think both stores carry almost the exact same product lines. Sephora probably carries a few more higher end lines that Ulta does not, but I know both stores carry the product lines I like (Bare Minerals, Smashbox, OPI, Philosophy, etc.) I like the fact that Ulta will carry lower-end/drugstore stuff and as a rewards member, at least twice a year you get a 20% off your entire purchase coupon that has very few restrictions. I also think their own brand is more reasonably priced than Sephora's (of which I find the quality to be quite similar).
And I love the Ulta salon.

1. Ulta, definitely.

Ulta carries more products and has a more laid back atmosphere. I find I am rarely offered help in one of our Sephoras and in the other, it is offered entirely too much.

2. Sephora- still far better than most make up stores.

3. Macy's Make Up counters.
