Did anyone get their ring appraised?

I've been reading up on getting my engagement ring appraised because the jeweler where my future hubby mentioned they were having an appraisal "event" where we could pay $150 for a specialist to appraise it. Everything I'm reading says to NOT have appraisals done with anyone associated with a jeweler, but I'm not sure where else to look.

My question is: Did anyone have their engagement ring appraised in the Southern NJ/Philadelphia area, and where did you go?

Thanks for any help!

I went to Billig Jewlers in Marlton to get mine appraised.  It only cost me $50 I think (it's been a while).  I heard that you aren't supposed to go to anyone associated with the jewler as well.

What do you mean by "associated with a jeweler?"  The jeweler who made mine appraised it for us when my FI got it.

I've heard that the appraiser might be a little generous with the worth if he is connected with the jeweler (as in he is employed there).  I guess because since his friend or boss sold the ring, it would look good for him to say its worth more or cover for him if he ripped you off?  I'm not sure if it's totally true, but I figured I would go to a different jewler anyway.  Jewlers are every where in Marlton, and the guy my FI got the ring from is up in North Jersey.  I figured it was easier to go to a local anyway.

I don't know how you would get a ring appraised properly if you didn't get it appraised by a jeweler who knows about jewelry.  I think you mean you shouldn't get it appraised by the jeweler you got it from? That's what I've heard that you want an outside jeweler someone independent to appraise your ring so that it's unbiased. I got my appraised by Bailey Banks and Biddle in the KOP mall but they closed. We are going to get our wedding bands appraised at Bernie Robbins in Marlton. HTH!

My ring was purchased from and appraised by Marlton Family Jewelers. We received two copies, so one could be sent in to purchase insurance for the ring.

Thanks for the input! I just wasn't sure if it was common practice to get an appraisal and what the reputable places are that I could go to in this area.

I work in the insurance industry.  To be honest you should really have two appraisals.  One to know how your ring appraises in value.  It should appraise higher then purchase price.  When you insure an item of jewelery, an insurance company will replace it to be as close to the original as possible by spending the least amount of money they can.  My theory on that is to get a replacement appraisal as well. Example.  You get a ring and it appraises for 10,000.  Your fiance only spent  7,500.  You know it was a good deal but to get it replaced maybe would be 8500 to 8750.  That would be the amount to insure it for.  You dont want to spend the extra money insuring it for the appraised amount if you are not going to get that back.  Talk to you insurance company to see how they replace the item to see how you benefit.  Some companies are pricey too so check out jewelersmutual.com to see how they match up!!    Hope that helps :o)
