When to write thank-yous?

Our wedding is Jun. 5, and we just received our first couple of gifts in the mail this week, and I opened them. Should we write thank-you notes now, or wait until after the wedding? My FI thinks we should wait until after the wedding, because we're not supposed to let them know we opened them. I think we should write them now so they know we received and appreciate them. Who's right?
Also, are you allowed to use gifts you receive before the wedding? I'm okay with either way, I just wondered.

I would write them now for the same reasons you said, that they know you received them and appreciate them.  We had the same thing happen with some shower gifts, and they were asking relatives if we had received them, plus that's a few less thnak you's you have to write after the wedding!  Also, we are using most of our things from the shower already, I feel the same way about wedding gifts:) HTH!

Yes, open the gifts, check to make sure nothing is broken, and write the thank you note now.  Technically you're not supposed to use wedding gifts until after the wedding.  Just in case something happens and the wedding doesn't go through, you're supposed to return the gifts to the givers.  Take it for what you will, but I know I've already used some gifts that we really needed around the house.

Ditto PPs! Plus, the "expected" turn around time is 3 months for TY cards - this give you a head start! ;-)
