Is she planning the wedding seriously? Or is she just caught up in the whole "wedding" thing? Since you said "boyfriend" I assume they aren't engaged yet. While I don't really *love* the idea of pre-planning, I would think at her age, I would rather her be pre-planning than actually planning her wedding.

As for your question? Yes, I think that, in general, 17 is too young to get married.

  • I'm no lawyer, but my understanding is that the legal age to get married in California, without parental written consent, is 18. So, unless the parents agree, this wedding isn't happening anyway.
  • I was 17 when I got engaged, I turned 18, 9 days later. Anyways, 17 is very young to actually start planning. T and I are going to wait until we graduate college to get married. Perhaps your sister could put the wedding on hold.
He stole my heart, so I'm stealing his last name.
  • how long has she been with her bf? are they serious or she just obsessed with her bf?   i was 14 when i started dating my bf and im 18 now and we have been discussing marriage... i think it really depends on how long they been togehter, how mature they are, and how serious they are.
  • Are they seriously planning? Or is she just like, "Oh, one day when we get married we'll have this, and this and this...." in that kind of daydream mode?

If she's planning for real, that is WAY too young to be married. I would sit her down and talk to her about all the responsibilities that marriage comes with, like providing for themselves, having a job, living on their own, etc.
  • If you can't vote, I think you're too young to get married. I know it varies depending on the state, but in some cases, you may need parental consent to get married before 18. I know statistic's aren't everything, but divorce rates ARE higher for couples who get married before the age of 25. I think it depends on the couple, but anything younger than 18 is definitely too young.

  • I got engaged a month and a half before my 18th birthday. I'm getting married at 19 but I think if you need parental consent you're too young
  • I was 18 when i met my future husband and i wouldhave married him then lol looking back i'm glad i didnt a house and two kids later (i'm now almost 23) put stress on us that would have broke a marriage, it broke our relationship. we are now a year and a half from our wedding. we will have been together 6years when we get married and there is no reason to rush. my brother met his wife in grade shcool and got married at 20 and they are still going strong after 5 years. it really depends on the people involved but love will hold on for a few years

  • I'm 18, engaged, so what? My mom got married when she was 19 and her and my dad are still happily together.
And since your daughter is under 18 she can't get married without your consent anyway. So if you don't want the wedding happening, it's not happening, at least not until they turn 18.
  • My fiance and I were engaged when we were 16. We're 18 now, and planning on getting married after we graduate college (probably 20), but I remember how after we got engaged we were planning everything, even though we couldn't marry until after we turned 18. So, it may just be that they're planning their future wedding, but not actually getting married right away.

  • At least in Ohio (don't know about other states) one person has to be 18 and the other at least 16 w/ parental consent. I don't know if it specifies which person needs to be 18, but I've only seen it where the girl was underage and the guy was 18. (worked in the marriage license dept for a few years). Both parents of the underage person would have to be there to sign consent for the marriage license. Look up your local state laws.
