What are you doing with your wedding dress after the wedding?

H brought my dress to the cleaner's this morning because the bottom of the skirt got completely filthy in the rain the night of the wedding. They asked if it was to be cleaned and preserved, or just cleaned, and H said just to clean it for now because he wasn't sure what I wanted.

I really like the idea of being able to put my dress on when ever I feel like it. I'd love to be able to parade around in it on our anniversary or just when I'm feeling silly or nostalgic. But I know if I get the dress preserved, it will be a waste of money if I'm going to open the box months later or something. I also don't have an abundance of closet space and H and I are not into hanging on to anything that doesn't have a current purpose in our lives.

What do you all plan on doing with your dress after the wedding? I'm leaning towards letting it hang in the closet until I either preserve it or donate it, and just not deciding right away.

  • I haven't decided.  I almost feel like it's not worth preserving because it will just sit in a closet for years.  But I feel like if I sell it or something, I may regret it later.  Sooo...probably clean it then decide later!

  • I'm going to try and sell it. Or, failing that, donate it. The thought has crossed my mind to take some of the fabric to make some keepsakes for the future, but then I wouldn't be able to pass the dress along. Hmm. I guess I'm not as set on the decision as I thought!

  • I've always wanted to do one of those trash the dress photo shoots. All the pics you wouldn't take on your wedding day cause you didn't want to get the dress dirty LOL

  • im not sure either.  FI thinks that one of my daughters may want to wear it one day and I just dont see that.  We definitely are on different wave lengths here.  I want to hand down the bridal headband with the jewels on it to my daughters...he thinks the dress is more sentimental....to him it is...and I get that...but for me...its just not...to be preserved in a box and just have it sit around....big sigh...I dont know....so....I haven't decided yet either...

  • I haven't decided yet, either. I do not see myself preserving it. I am sentimental, but not to that degree. That''s not to say that I want to do a "trash the dress" shoot, either.  I will probably just hang it in my closet.

Side note: a girlfriend of mine turned her dress into a Christmas tree skirt. Her MIL was horrified, but it worked beautifully.

That is actually a neat idea, but picturing MIL having a freakout just made my day. :)
