Be careful of what people post on the Knot!

A week and a half ago, my computer was destroyed from a link someone posted here on the Knot.  The link seemingly seemed safe, but suddenly my computer got trojan horses, a worm, and porn malware.  I don't know how that was possible, especially since McAfee looked at my computer just the day before (my virus software was having trouble) and there were no problems.  It is only today that I finally have a new computer with Internet connection.  I gave up on PCs and went Mac, as I'm tired of dealing with viruses.

    Just because you have a Mac does not mean you are free from viruses. I work in computers and I have anti-virus installed on my mac because I had malware get onto my computer and it actually stole my credit card info - after seeing all kinds of freaky purchases from my credit card account even though I still had it in my pocketbook - and running a scan on my mac and discovering malware. The Mac is A LOT more protected than the PC but don't be deceived.

    Joy - how do you run a scan on your Mac?  I should do that (unless I am not capable in which case I probably wouldn't pay someone else to do it).

    Joesgurl - download AVG (its free antivirus)

    Link scanner is great because you can Command+Click on a link and select "Scan link". Google links will have an icon next to them to tell you flat out if its safe.

    That's the explanatory page of all the AVG products. I've been using them for years.

    Wow, thanks for posting this!  I have a mac at home and I figured it was safe compared to most PC stuff out there, but now that you've posted this and Joyful posted about AVG I may just go home and download AVG to my mac.  So far I think I've been pretty good, and I empty my "cache" and reset Safari pretty much once a week just in case, but with the internet, and all of the crazies out there... no way to be totally "safe" anymore.  It's kind of sad.

    If you are conciously dilligent - you will probably be ok without it, but I always recommend it anyways. :) Just to be safe.
