Help with Names on Invitation Envelopes

I'm looking up the proper ways to word our envelopes and just read that the inner envelopes should be addressed as well.  Is this necessary?
If I am inviting someone with a guest I thought I could just write that on the Outer Envelope (.i. Ms. Sally Smith and Guest)
I'm having my Matron of Honor write out all of the envelopes so I'm trying to keep her job relatively simple.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes you are supposed to address the inner envelope as well.

If the outer says: Mr. and Mrs. John Smith
    123 Main Street
    Town, State Zip

The inner says: Mr. and Mrs. Smith

As for guests, if you can't find out the name of the guest ahead of time, then you address the outer to Mr. John Smith and the inner to Mr. Smith and Guest

I had this big list of all the formality you are supposed to use when addressing them. After doing a few when my FI and I were writing them out we said forget it! We formally adressed the outer envelopes and them made the inside informal - us really I guess lol. I wrote Aunt ___ and Uncle ___. Also the names we call our friends like our best man we all call Flash (his name is really Anthony). I think you can do whatever you want and works for you! I don't have the patience for all the formal crap and frankly people tear it open and throw it out, but that's just me.

Thanks!  It's amazing how much I'm still learning about this whole process :)

We were informal with the inner envelopes (not as informal as Kris0816).

We did first and last names so:

    John and Cathy Smith
    John Smith and Cathy Jones
    John Smith and Guest

didn't matter how they were related to us (or not related ;))

but yes, you really should address the innver envelope

my mom was being super picky about etiquette and she was handwriting all the invites, so i let her do it.
