Metal ugly chairs ;(

My reception site only has ugly metal fold up chairs so I was wondering how any of you ladies spiced yours up to look nicer. They aren't rusty or falling apart it just bothers me that they are metal fold up and not banquet style. I priced chair rental and chair coverings which comes out to over $600 ;( Has anyone made their own?

  • Butts sit on chairs. People don't stare at them, and there will be very few photos of people's butts in chairs.  You're overthinking something that really is NO BIG DEAL.  Please spend your money elsewhere.  Your guests will be more appreciative of a better meal or an  open bar than they will of a pretty chair.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • no i totally get your gripe. if i have a gorgeous space then metal folding chairs would killthe look.
is there any way that you can rent covers for them? or decorate them somehow with fabric over the back of the chairs? at least to hide that part? how hard could ie be to make covers for the backs of the charis? seems like it wouldbe tiem consuming but not impossible.
have you looked on ebay or anything to see if anyone is selling them? it might be cheaper to buy and then incorporate the colors somehow...

This is so true.  I wasn't thrilled with our choice of chairs but now that I look back at my pictures, there is not one picture with a chair in it.  So those ugly black chairs that I wanted to spend a crap load of money replacing with chivari chairs would have been a big waste of cash because there wouldn't have been a single picture of them.

  • You can rent Samsonite white plastic folding chairs for less than $1 each.  You will spend at least that much trying to cover up the ugly chairs, and you will end up with something that doesn't look as good as the Samsonite chairs.  If it's really that important to you, just rent the chairs.

OP, I get you.  I wasn't having our chairs either....don't care if they were in the pictures or not.  I actually DO pay attention to ugly chairs at weddings (I've seen plenty of pictures where I said to myself "why didn't they get chairs covered for those?").

Although I wouldn't worry about the folding chair itself I would invest in some chair covers.  Look around, I found ours for $1 each with out sash and they looked fine with out the sash.

  • I think people DEFINITELY notice chairs. If you walk into a beautifully decorated reception space and see metal folding chairs, you wouldn't notice that?

Are you able to rent just chair covers, rather than covers and new chairs? Or maybe chiavari or opera chairs which don't need covers?

If not, you can rent or buy really wide "ribbons" to tie onto the backs of the chairs. I did that for an event once, over black folding chairs, and it looked fine.
  • I actually HATE chair covers, I find them uncomfortable and unnecessary and I'm one of those people who has commented on it at past weddings.

I really think that $600 would be put to better use for you improving your food or beverage options, that is something I would notice much quicker than not having a chair cover.

  • Chairs are important to the look of your reception.  They may not be in pictures but they are front of your guests the whole night. If I walked in to a beautiful reception and saw ugly metal chairs I would see it as taking away from the beauty of the overall look.

    Some suggestions:
Chair covers (about $3.00 to rent where I am)
White wooden folding chairs  (about $2.50 each to rent here)
Resin Chairs (about $3.25 to rent here)

  • Thanks ladies for the advice. I talked to my mom who thinks she can make something to go over the back rather than the whole chair. I think we will try this first and see how it would save us cost wise and how it looks.
  • I had the same issue, ugly brown metal folding chairs (we are using a community center for the reception). It ended up being less to rent chairs than to rent chair covers and sashes. Same as above, it is costing is $2.50 for white resin chairs with a padded seat and about $100 for them to all be set up for us. Chair covers with sashes were $4.50 plus $1 each for set up.
