Advise on caterers

We are planning a barn/rustic wedding for October 2012 and we are paying for everything so we are trying to keep it inexpensive. Does anyone have suggestions on a reasonable caterer in the area? I was thinking that a barn wedding would lend itself to more casual food but I don't want it to be cheesy or cheap....tough balance to strike and I am super anxious about it! Does anyone have thoughts on whether to use plastic or china plates for a barn reception? everything seems like such a big deal !

Help! :)

I was at a barn wedding this past weekend and it was gorgeous.  They had paper plates that looked like wood and grey striped paper straws by the lemonade.  They didn't serve a full meal, but had BBQ chicken breasts, steak kabobs, potato salad, corn, bread, and green beans.  It was delicious and filling.  It didn't look or feel cheap at all.

Personally, I prefer going to weddings with more casual food because that is the food I like!  I have been to weddings with very fancy food and it just did not appeal to me (and tiny portions!).  My brother is having a barn wedding this October and they are serving fried chicken which is fitting for their "country" theme.  I also think BBQ is a fun idea.  I am all about fun and different and wish I was doing a barn wedding but I didnt want to be too similar to my brothers.  I agree with PP about that a cute patterned paper plate would be great if you are trying to keep costs down. China can add a big chunk of money if you are on a budget.

Here are some reasonable caterers I have come across:

    Lothers
Be Creative Catering ( I think this is who I will be using, have heard good things about them and have been great so far)
    Chef's Choice Catering
    Cincinnati Catering

Also, if you want to go the route of BBQ, check out City BBQ or even Walt's.  My family loves Walts.

    Good luck!

We have tested a few caterers and decided out of the testings that Martha's Catering www.marthascatering.com was the best tasting and the best priced! (9.50 pp)

We were going to choose them until we decided to go with Famous Daves and do the BBQ thing.

Also, we had a tasting with Be Creative and IMO it wasn't very good. Everything tasted really box made.

Just taste out a few and see who you like :)

We used A Taste of Class and I have to say it was awesome. We paid like 8 dollars a head and got a buffet with hamburgers, hot dogs, and some sides like potatoes and mac and cheese. It was great for a picnic feel. I got nicer plastic plates and I ordered "ecoware" (google ecoware cutlerly) and tied them into napkins from Ikea. It was inexpensive but a really nice touch to a more casual rustic wedding.

Pompillio's should have both reasonable and informal menus.  They consistently get great reviews here.
