Honeymoon Registry

I wish I would have know about the honeymoon registry earlier. We added it to our website only about a month before the wedding. We did get about $200, which is awesome! Just be forewarned (and I'm sure it is in the fine print, which I never read) that the company I used did take a small percentage... really not even noticeable, but nothing out there is "free"! Anyways, think about it... Happy Planning

There are honeymoon registries that do not charge. It is important to do your research and know this ahead of time. Most people on this board though despise honeymoon registries so I am sure you will get lectured by some other posters.

I don't understand what's wrong with guests just giving you a check or cash in an envelope and not having a website take out a percentage. Why go through a middle man just to get cash from guests, when many guests choose of their own volition to give money anyway? Seems like a lot of extra work for nothing.

I love that you guys always say "Fees". When there are options out there that do not have fees.

And no, not all family members give cash automatically. But assuming that everyone gives cash does not make your point valid. Many family members do not mind a honeymoon registry and just because you may despise it does not mean everyone does. It is important to be honest and true in everything you do. So please do not just assume that every bride who has a honeymoon registry is trying to cheat and swindle their guests.

Unless you are dealing directly with a company (like Marriott), I've never seen a honeymoon registry service not charge some sort of fee.

Honeyfund.com does not charge fees. There are other ones out there as well.

But it IS deceitful. When a guest goes on one of those HM registries, they think they are purchasing a romantic dinner, a massage, a parasailing excursion, etc. Meaning they think their money is going directly to THAT excursion on the HM and that is what the money is used for. Not true. The website, whether they take a cut or not, simply cuts the bride and groom a check for that amount. So if a guest pays $200 for a couples massage, the massage is not booked. The B&G just get a check for $200 (or less if there are fees).

The B&G can then do WHATEVER they want with that money. So the guest thinks they just bought a massage, while the B&G might use it to buy household supplies, just for instance. So it is deceiving the guest. They did not actually purchase what they thought they would. They are just giving cash, which would have been much easier to do by just putting cash in an envelope.

So no, not all guests give cash, but those that want to give physical gifts still will do so, HM registry or not. And those that don't want to give cash and therefore purchase something from a HM registry are actually ending up giving cash anyway.

<div>If you want to use a credit card there is a fee charged thru PayPal. So while the registry does not charge a fee there is still a fee associated with the transaction.</div><div>

Personally I think the whole honeymoon registry idea is tacky as hell. And I totally agree with Summer on her point, it's deceitful. However, in some regions and social circles, it's perfectly acceptable, just like how in some circles/regions, drink tickets or cash bars are acceptable. I could never have one for myself and FI, I'm just not down with blatantly asking for cash instead of a boxed gift. But if a HM reg is what floats your boat, good for you. Just don't expect the rest of us to agree.

My entire point is that instead of blasting people that do honeymoon registries or ask about them why don't you educate them.
You could say "Some people do not find them appropriate and tacky because of these reasons. If you choose to do a honeymoon registry make sure that you do this instead"

Instead you just say how horrible the people are and how terrible of an idea it is because SOME people misuse them and SOME websites charge fee's.

I am not using a honeymoon registry but I made one to see how it works. No one has access to it and I did not give the information out. But I know that I can educate people and be nice and honest without blasting them off of the forum. Tell your opinion all you want but you don't have to be rude about it and instead of just saying "I hate you for that decision" say why you dislike them and what they could do to improve on them if they choose to do that so that their guests would not be upset.

Not one single person in this thread said either of the bolded comments, so there's that. Also telling people how they get misused and how they charge fees IS educating them on why they are looked down on. So I guess I just don't see much validity in what you're saying.
