Flowers submerged in water Centerpieces

I've seen a lot of pictures of flowers submerged in water as centerpieces. I'm wondering if anyone has seen this done at a wedding before.  Also, if you have any recommendations for this I would greatly appreciate it.  I found a "how to" online, but any tips would be helpful for example using real vs. fake flowers.

    Fake flowers tend to float.

Real flowers with a strong center stem (calla, gerbera, roses) seem to work best.

The vase needs to be narrow so that you can wedge the flower into the vase.

With more than 2 flowers per vase, you lose the stark simple lines of the flowers.

This would be relatively inexpensive, wouldn't it? Especially, if you're only using 1 or 2 stems per table?

Are you having trouble with the flowers floating? I couldn't get a calla to stay at the bottom, even with rocks. So, I had the idea of hot glue gunning a marble to the end of the stem. It worked perfectly!

So this is a dumb question maybe, but do the vases HAVE to be really narrow? My sister is getting married two months before me so I could use some of hers, but they're not that narrow so I'm thinking I might have to buy new ones anyway...the ones she has are squarish and wider at the top.

    Thoughts??
