April 2012 Weddings

More or Less?

Now that we're getting close with most of the big things planned and booked, I thought it would be interesting to compare notes and see what everyone's experience was of what turned out to cost less, or more, than originally expected.  What great bargains did you find?  And what did you splurge on?

The thing I was most surprised by was my dress, I spent much less on it than I had budgeted.  I'm taking a carriage ride between the hotel where I'll be getting ready and the venue, and that turned out to be less than what I planned.  For what she's charging to travel, take pictures all day, and give us the disk, our photographer was also a bargain.

As far as splurges, I'm having a cake topper made to look like fiance and me, and this turned out to be more than I expected.  The disk of my bridal pictures was also more than I expected.  Fiance wanted yellow gold for his wedding band, and his ring turned out to be more than we expected.  The package at our venue was more than I expected but reasonable for our area.  Getting married at a church, particularly outside the parish where our house is located, was so much more than we expected that we forewent it in favor of a ceremony at the venue.

I went into the planning process afraid of how much everything was going to cost just for one day, even if it was going to be a very special day, and I feel better now that I can see the things I spent more on are going to last a long time and give me good memories.

Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.

Re: More or Less?

  • Hmm, interesting.  I definitely spent much more on my dress than I thought/wanted to, but I fell in love with it and couldn't get it out of my mind and knew nothing else would compare.  Photographer was a little more than I expected, but reasonable for our area.  DJ was much less than I expected.  Transportation is more than I expected.
  • That cake topper sounds awesome!  Good splurge :)

We were shocked at how much wedding cakes cost, but we ended up getting our cake for close to half of what we budgeted, because of a screwed up meeting with the baker.  yay!   We are definitely paying more for photography than I ever thought we would, but we decided that we didn't want to skimp on something that important, so to me it's worth the $$.

I got a steal of a deal on my veil too, when I discovered valuveil.  $10 veil?  Yes please!

  • I don't even want to talk about it!! lol It seems that everything has become more $ than I was expecting. The cake is only $45 because it comes with the venue's package, but I upgraded it, so I guess I saved there from having to buy my own cake. My mom bought my veil and dress for me, so I am only paying for the alterations. I'm paying A LOT for my photography, especially since I lost my deposit with my original photgrapher who I fired, but I was expecting that. And when it comes to pictures, that's the only thing you have after the day is over, so I don't mind the cost. The more I think about all the money I'm spending, the more I wish we just eloped, but I never had a big wedding the first time around, so here we are. too late now! lol

  • We spent way more on linen rental than I thought we would....3$ for a friggin chair sash? Craziness! I know there are cheaper ways, but we didn't want to buy then resell... I also spent way more on the flowers than i budgeted for.

I spent way LESS on the DJ, Dress and photographer than I planned to spend...

I am 100% satisfied with my splurges though :)
  • I think we kept flowers, photographer, invitations, cake toppers, table numbers, and favors under budget but went over the videography, my dress, and my shoes...I still have no veil or accessories and our guest list kinda grew but I blame Fi for that.

I guess I sort of hoped my MOH's dad would give us a better deal for us on photography, but he cut the travel fee and is giving us unlimited time, so that's saving us a few hundred and every little bit helps. Whatevs!

We got a major deal on the reception venue (only a $150 fee!) and the required caterer (~$15/person, half price for kids!). And my dress was free, since it was my aunts. I just have to pay about $200 in alterations.

If all this crapola with FMIL proceeds to get worse and we have to buy new invites, that will cost us about $50extra, plus we may have to pay more to have the ceremony at the reception venue, I'm thinking anywhere from $200-1K more. We may just do our own RD and have to pay for the alcohol ourselves somehow. We'll probably just do beer and a siggy cocktail, maybe a wine or 2.

  • Things that ended up being overbudget:
    - reception venue/caterer (my mom is paying for this, and it does include a lot: cake, fresh flower centerpieces, open bar, food, other decor)
    - the dress (by almost twice as much as what I wanted to spend lol)
    - DJ
    - veil

    Things that were underbudget:
    - headpiece ($25 woohoo!)
    - shoes
    - invites
    - favors
    - rings (surprisingly!)

I ended up being right on target with my flowers, photographer, and string quartet for the church. You win some and you lose some I guess lol.

  • The photographer was definitly more than I expected but I'm sure she's going to be worth it, esp. since we're not paying for a video.  The catering I bet will be more than I budgeted (still have no final pp $) b/c I want to go local with the food.

I got the venue and the dress for way less b/c I bid on them at fundraisers/auctions.  Still, though, it's amazing how expensive everything is and how quickly it adds up.  I think I'll be close to my total budget. I was hoping for $10,000 total (w/o honeymoon), but it looks like, with Honeymoon it's going to be more like $13,000. Still, not that bad for 100 people, right? geez, I hope so. Laughing
