Bridal Party Gifts?

So, I've been hearing that for DWs, a lot of brides give really expensive gifts to their bridal party members because everyone is spending so much money in order to attend and be part of the wedding. Is this something you girls are doing/did?

What are you doing for your bridesmaids/groomsmen gifts? I'm traditionally a gift card giver, but I feel like this would be a tad inappropirate in this case... I also don't want to give them something bulky that will take up space and add poundage to their suitcases... I'm horrible at picking gifts for other people... I would love to hear what you all are doing!

My MOH is totally adventurous, and she works in the fisheries dept of the goverenment, so I'm thinking of taking a day with her out to the north shore for a shark dive, then maybe lunch.  Right up her ally.  I didn't want to jewlery or anything for the wedding, as she's picking whatever she wants to wear, and those never seem like great gifts to me.  Hope that helps

We are getting the BM's a nice necklace and the GM a nice watch. We haven't picked them out yet but we have planned to spend a few hundred on each. I am not sure this would be different if we were not having a DW.

I bought the BMs a nice bracelet from Kate Spade New York to wear for the wedding. This cost about $250 each. I also paid for 1/2 of each of their dresses and will probably be paying for their mani-pedis and seaside massages at our spa day the day before the wedding.

As for the GM, we haven't decided yet...

I only had one BM fly in for the wedding, the other was my little sister. So, only two, which made things a lot easier. For both bridesmaids, I got personalised jewellery travel bags, paid for their snorkelling trip, rented diamonds from www.adorn.com, had massages at the Grand Wailea, and did mani/pedis at Stranz in Kihei's Rainbow Mall.

For the boys, FI paid for their gear, a night out, engraved flasks and liquor to go in it.

But, I really enjoyed the idea of providing an activity, especially since it is a destination wedding, to add to their experience and memories. Activities definitely don't add bulk to suitcases.  Plus, since you're doing it too, it extends your wedding festivities that much more.  I loved that our wedding wasn't just one day--it was 5!

We paid for accommodation for 5 nights for our respective parties, and gave them a few small gifts (scrimshaw pocket knives for the boys, sarongs and bags for the girls).

I think it's important not to compare yourself to what other people have done. Do what you can afford to do, and go from there.

After reading everyone's responses (with my FI), our eyes bugged out. Thank you to Alyson for the comment about not comparing yourself to what other people are doing/have done. Makes me feel good that you said that.

My FI and I are paying for our entire wedding, so it's definitely difficult for us to set aside so much per person, especially since we have 6 groomsmen and 6 bridesmaids. Those ideas are all great, and we both loved providing an activity for our bridal party.

Something to think about in the next year... :) Thanks for the input, ladies!

I haven't decided for my bridal party yet, but I was a BM in a Hawaii DW a few years back.  The bride had 4 bridesmaids and 3 junior bridesmaids.  For us BM, she paid for our dresses (bought fabric & had us pick dress design so we each were in a different style of the same fabric, we only had to buy our shoes) and gave us each a plumeria necklace from Na Hoku (I love this store!), and paid for H&M for us.  Oh, also she hosted a "Bridal Party" luncheon when we were out there, and invited all her girlfriends to come.  Prior to this when we had her bachelorette & shower she gave us each little bags with travel sized items from Bath & Body Works.  So... very generous, and they paid for the wedding themselves.
