How to pick hair and makeup person??

So, I am on the hunt for a hair and makeup artist that will come to me on my wedding day.  I have emailed and called a couple.  One said that she is available and she wanted to send me a contract in the mail.  I definetly want to do a trial before I make any type of commitment though..
Also, what is the average price for hair and makeup on the day of the wedding?

    I guess it would depend on what type of makeup and how intricate your hairstyle is going to be. I have seen  prices starting at 35 for makeup and 40 for hair at the salon. An airbrush artist I came across quoted 55 dollars if you had it done at his business but it increased greatly if he went to the ceremony site. I have also seen some other quotes for 60 or above for the starting price for hair. I live in
    Roanoke so if you live in Norfolk or Northern DC it may be even higher. Not sure that helped, hope it did a little. I have relied heavily on the suggestions of other brides on the knot. I just didn't have the time to collect brochures and see portfolios. If you have a little time between now and your wedding you could go to a big bridal show and check out lots of vendors in one spot. Good luck!

    I know at first it may sound off but some fantastic hairstylists work part time at places like hair cuttery, but it's hit or miss. I know I got my hair done in up dos for ring dances and proms at Hair 2 Spare on Battlefield Blvd near Ches General and they were FANTASTIC! It was like 50 dollars in salon, but maybe some would come to you? I never had a preference for hair for those dances and just let them do whatever they wanted. It looked amazing! I know my high school friend's sister works at Rudy and Kelly in Greenbrier and she did my hair for one of those dances and she did an amazing job too! I guess you could go into those types of places and see if they will come to you?
