XP: Father daughter dance

I posted in Music and no one responded... maybe someone here has some suggestions:

I'm having a hard time finding a song I like. My dad also doesn't know what he wants. We are pretty close but a lot of the traditional father daughter songs ick me out, or seem more appropriate for a child bride. Growing up he always listened to billy Joel, Bruce springsteen, Phil Collins, queen, hall and oates, aerosmith, bowie, etc. Id like something in that genre. Just the way you are by billy Joel and when you need me by Bruce springsteen are maybes.

Thanks.

I looked at the Music Music Music thread below and no new ideas :(

Re: XP: Father daughter dance

  • "Cinderella" by Steven Curtis Chapman...not sure if it's what you;re looking for but it's an amazing song! Like, get your hankies ready amazing!!
  • I'm having the same problem!!  So many of those songs creep me out.  The only thing my dad wants to do is a polka (we're of German descent)...which I'm fine with, but it's basically the same move over and over so I'm not sure how we'd fill a whole song out with that, haha.

I wish I had more advice for you but I'm in the same boat--good to know I'm not alone, though!  Let me know if you decide on one :)
  • I know what you mean. Dad and I are goofballs together. We share the same sense of humor and we're not very sentimental. I don't feel like the traditionally overplayed songs fit us. I asked dad to pick a song hoping he'd pick one that was maybe classic rock since that's what he likes. Instead he threw out a country one. Neither one of us like country. I think I'm gonna have to check out the songs you mentioned. I am stumped, but its important to me that we do the dance.
  • I understand! I think I've pretty much decided to go with Butterfly Kisses, though. I've always loved that song and if I listen to it now thinking about dancing with my dad, I start to cry, happy tears of course! We would probably take out the middle of it since it's such a long song.

  • What about Lullaby (Good Night My Angel) by Billy Joel.  He wrote it to his daughter.

I was going to suggest this.  Or Forever Young by Bob Dylan.  I think there's a version with Bruce Springstein also.  You didn't mention the Beatles, but I considered doing "In my Life".  I think my first choice right now is Paul Simon's "Father and Daughter."  "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts is also less sappy, child bride like.  Hope this helps, good luck!

  • I have no suggestions that would help as I like more of the I guess what you're calling child bride songs..like I loved her first...would have been my song to dance with my dad to if he was still living. No matter how old I am I'm still his little girl. Butterfly Kisses previously mentioned is another one I love as is Stealing Cinderella. I'm not too knowledgable about songs in the genre you are wanting.

  • I couldn't find a studio version of Forever Young by Bruce Springsteen - just a live one.  I feel like it would be weird to dance to a recorded live song! I like the words of that song, but I don't really care for Bob Dylan (sorry his voice - agh). Anything country or contemporary type ballads are precisely what I do not want (butterfly kisses, cinderella, my wish, etc).

I agree. I'm not a big fan of the popular, country first dance songs. I might do Somewhere Over the Rainbow, just because I love that song.

  • What about "When You Need Me" by Bruce Springsteen? I would totally dance to this with my dad, if we hadn't chosen another of his songs (If I Should Fall Behind) for our first dance. We're OBSESSED with The Boss. :)

I'm in the same boat about not wanting something too sappy. Forever Young by Bob Dylan is my no. 1 choice, but I'm not crazy about his slow version (it's the fast one I love), so I've been looking for a cover. A few other ideas:

You've Got a Friend: James Taylor
Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World: Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (others suggested)
    Wild World, Cat Stevens
Ain't That Love, Ray Charles (short!)
    Daughter, Loudon Wainwright III
  • Oh, one more thing - you mentioned not wanting to dance to a live version of a song, and our first dance is live. Our DJ is going to fade out before the applause start. We're lucky in that the version we like is from an old MTV Unplugged show, so it was made into a CD and there aren't any cheers in the middle. I think it can be done, in some cases, and people may not even realize it!
  • So I was going to do what a wonderful world by louis armstrong.  However, I'm not sure what the song means (or if it'd be appropriate for a dad/daughter dance) but I've always loved Landslide by Fleetwood Mac (my dad does too)  I tried to look up what it means and Stevie Nicks wrote it for her dad...but Idk if it was in a positive way or not.

How about You'll be in my Heart by Phil Collins - it's from one of the Disney movies. I just heard it on the radio the other day and thought "perfect wedding song" LOL. It's more upbeat but still has a nice message.

When you need me was one of the two I was thinking of from my op. I've heard if I should fall behind but can't remember specifics right now but will have to check it out.

I love James Taylor but my dad thinks he's dorky ha. Also I think the daughter song is really nice but I can't help but take lyrics literally.... And the I 'bought her everything she owns' lines rule it out and bring it into the child bride category.

Also really love landslide but fleetwood mac/stevie nicks really reminds me of an ex.

I think the world needs more non iggy father daughter dance songs.
