Bedding question

FI and I have been trying to find a comforter/bedding to register for and I am just getting more and more confused and frustrated.

We're registered at Macy's and Bed, Bath & Beyond. Ideally we'd like to get something from the Hotel Collection at Macy's. Our current bedding is from it and we love it. Very high quality, comfortable, etc. Problem is everything they have now is HIDEOUS. Actually we haven't found anything in either store (and online) that we don't hate.

There seems to be a lot of "duvet covers" out now. I am just confused. Those go over a duvet? Actually I don't even know what a duvet is. Is that a down comforter? Are they different?

Those of you with the duvets..would you recommend them? Is it easier to deal with and clean than a traditional comforter?

Any insight would be appreciated. I know these are dumb questions but I am just so confused and frustrated right now.

I could be wrong but I believe a duvet is literally just a cover to put your comforter in!

With a duvet cover, you have to buy a duvet to put it on. Duvets come in down and down alternative, and they come in varying degrees of thickness/warmth. Macys & BB&B sell duvets so you can register for one, or IKEA sells them really cheaply. If you go into any store like BB&B or Macys they have a display of all the thicknesses.

Oh and also-duvet covers are super easy to clean, they are usually cotten and a lot smaller than trying to shove a giant comforter into the washer-they fit in with your normal clothes.

FI and I just went through this duvet/comfortor debate. From what I understand, a duvet is like a plain white comforter. A comfortor is sewn with coloured or patterned fabric, and a duvet cover is like a giant pillowcase for a duvet. The major pro of having a duvet and duvet cover is that you can take the cover off and just wash that, rather than putting a whole big comforter in your washer and dryer. I think this will work well for us, since we'll be living in an apartment, and probably won't have insuite laundry.

My mom, on the other hand, lives in a big house with a large, energy efficient washer and dryer, as well as a clothesline in the backyard for when the weather is decent. She likes just throwing comforters in the wash, without having to take a cover off and put it back on later.

If you can't find one before the wedding Id just say look elsewhere and use gift cards or cash you get

Thanks ladies. I was just confused since the comforters didn't say "duvet" on it. I didn't know if it was the same or something different.

Zims, that's not a bad idea. Maybe we can register for the comforter and just buy the cover later.

Any recommendations on warmth or down vs. down alternative? I would assume we'll go with a "year round warmth" or maybe the one that's a little colder than that because I get crazy hot when I sleep.

I'm allergic to down so I have to use the alternative. I think down lasts a little longer, the alternative gradually flattens out.

For warmth, I think it's a matter of personal preference. FI HATES a big thick blanket so we have to use the thinnest one possible, plus our apartment is always at least 75+ in the winter so we don't need a really thick one.

I have used the comforter covers and they are okay. It is hard to get different brands to fit, in my opinion. If the comforter is oversized, it will bunch, if it is smaller, it will have gaps in the edges. (If you are getting a comforter and a cover, I would suggest buying it at the same store and the same brand.) I have a few of them but don't use them anymore. I had issues with it sliding down inside during the night. I recently read that the thicker ones with more stuffing work better, not the lighter ones. We just wash our comforter every month, we don't use a cover.

I am a huge fan of duvet covers because they allow you to change up the look of your bedroom much more cheaply than buying a new comforter/duvet everytime (not to mention, much easier to store folded duvet covers than comforters.

My philosophy to buying comforters is the same as it for clothes - invest in a really good staple (comforter) and then you xan spend less on the "accessories (cover). I bought my comforter from LL Bean - I love their quality and lifelong return policy. For comforter covers, I love Crate and Barrel - they have some great sales on their Marimekko patterns and those also have the little ties in the corners to hold the comforter in place so it doesn't slide around in the cover.

These days, duvet covers and duvets are the same thing. You buy a comforter to put inside them. They have ribbons in them that are used to secure the comforter inside. Flip the duvet inside out, lay the comforter on top, and secure it. I add a few safety pins to the perimeter to help. Size are standard. Down is warmest, but there are difference levels of fill. In my opinion, the best bedding at a mall store would be from Restoration Hardware and William-Somona Home. After those, I would say Pottery Barn linens are also nice.
