Ideas for stuff to do in VA?

So, while we originally wanted to go to Ireland for the honeymoon, that's going to have to be an anniversary trip. We've ended up booking a week total at two different resorts in Virginia for next June. We're only traveling part of the way post-wedding as it's roughly 7 hours to the first one.

We've got Sun-Wed in Williamsburg (planning for Busch Gardens as it's ~2 miles) and Wed-Sat in Gordonsville. There will be some kind of day trip to Washington D.C. and maybe also Monticello while at the latter.

Basically, we're getting these places free due to my parents generously using their points on us, so we really only have to pay for gas, food/entertainment, and potentially shopping. Anybody have any suggestions? Obviously it's rather early in the process for honeymoon planning, but we had to book now or not be able to get the rooms.

  • There are actually some nice wineries in Va so you could do some wine tasting on your trip :)  Check out http://www.virginiawine.org/regions for what regions you will be closest to.  We visit the Northern Va and Chesapeake Bay regions as those are closest to where we live and have found some nice wineries (especially in the Northern Va area).  Have a wonderful honeymoon!

  • I agree with PP that there are some really nice wineries in VA.  We've mostly been to the ones around Leesburg, since that's closest to where we live, but I know there are some around Shenandoah that are good as well.

Not sure what time of year you're going, but Shenandoah Park is a nice trip.  If you're into hiking, there's a great day hike of Old Rag that has amazing views from the top.  Skyline Drive is also nice, just to drive and look if you're not into hiking.  Luray Caverns is nearby the park as well.  It's not the coolest thing ever on the planet, but it's kinda neat.

  • If you are going to hit Williamsburg for BG there is also Water Country, Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown (which has several differnt attractions).   Virginia Beach is only about an hour drive from wmbg.  There is a beach at Yorktown too, it's just riverfront instead of oceanfront.

  • A lot of hiking, outdoorsy stuff, caves etc in Southwest VA. For the DC trip: Get a map and do it on your own. They have these "special tour busses" but they are really more confusing and overpriced than anything else. DC is a very walkable city, esp. for the main attractions.  And there's a good metro as well. Also, most (if not all) of the museums are free. There's also a pretty decent theatre scene there. Good luck!
  • skyline dr!!!  another yes to the wineries near Leesburg.  one of our fav memories was driving along the little offbeat roads and stopping at the quaint shops
