paying for rental tuxedos

What is the norm for paying to rent tuxedos? Is each groomsmen expected to pay for it himself?
If so, what is a reasonable price?
I'm worried I am going to get the brunt if they aren't happy about it...

Re: paying for rental tuxedos

  • The groom should speak individually with each groomsmen to determine what their budgets are. The price depends on what type of tuxedo, and can range from probably $100 to a few hundred by the time you add in shoes, vest/cummerbund, tie, shirt, etc. As long as the groom stays within the lowest budget given to him by his individual groomsmen, then it's fine. Keep in mind that tuxedos are appropriate for formal evening weddings, and should not be worn for informal weddings or during the daytime. Suits are perfectly appropriate for most weddings, and most men already own them.

  • Ditto PP. Your FI should talk to each GM privately about what his budget is. Then he needs to work within those budgets, or if he goes above it, he should pay the difference. Typically, GMs do pay for their own tuxes.

They come in a wide variety of price points. We got ours through Seno and the most basic ones were about $80 or 90, going all the way up to about $150.

  • Each Gm should pay for their own tux.  Find out what each of their budgets are and pick one within it.  For reference ours costs $130 at a local shop.

  • Typically GMs pay for their own rentals.  They should know when they accept being a GM that there will be some costs involved, but ditto PPs that the groom should check with them to see what they're okay spending.

I think ours were about $120 each.
  • My FI talked to each one of his groomsmen after we found out what the tuxes were going to cost to make sure that each of them could pay for them. He told them that if they found that it was going to be difficult to come up with the money to let us know and we would figure out some way to help. Their tuxes are $108 and are from Joseph A. Banks. Only one of the groomsmen said he would need help so we are paying all but the $30 deposit that is due at fitting.

  • It's usual for GMs to pay for their own.  We paid for our WP's attire, though, and we were able to do it for around $1k between five BMs/GMs.  That being said, as others have done, you need to have FI talk to them about their budget before you go in to look.  The cheapest rentals are probably around $100.  You usually get a deal if you rent more, so if your father/FIL are considering, I would take that into account as well.
  • We have 3 GMs, my FI and son renting tuxes.  They are about $120 for the adults and $80 for my son.  One of our GMs can't swing the $120 so we are covering it, but the other 2 are paying for their own.
