Gifts?

I'm sure this has been posted in some other board but I'm too lazy to look. Isn't the rule that you aren't suposed to open wedding gifts until after the wedding? If so, how am I supposed to send a thank you if I don't know what's inside?

Re: Gifts?

  • You may open the gifts, so you know what to thank the gift giver for and to make sure it isn't broken or damaged. You aren't supposed to use the gifts until after the wedding.

I've been opening them, but we put them in storage until after the wedding.

Edit: And, I don't think it is really a big deal to use them before.  My friend did, it isn't like anyone will know! We just want to wait because our place is so small.

Lol. I'm tired of looking at a pile of stuff sitting in my livingroom! I want to use it. Especially the sheets. But I'm with Mandy, it's something to look forward to after the wedding.
  • I've opened mine and I'm pretty sure that is the etiquette rule, but haven't used anything yet. Not because you are/aren't supposed to, but because with everything else going on I just haven't had time... so they are in a pile in what's become the chaotic "wedding room" in my house.

  • We've only received two gifts, but we've opened them as well as used them. One gift was our KA stand mixer that my parents got us on a Black Friday deal. Because there is only a one year warranty on the mixers, my parents actually gave it to us in December and asked us to use it and not to wait until the wedding. The other gift was one of our dish sets, and I told FI we weren't supposed to use it but he was really confused by that and refused to follow that rule lol.

<div>I agree with this.  I didn't have any space to store a bunch of boxes, so I had to put everything away.  The only reason you aren't supposed to use anything is in the event you don't end up getting married and having to return the gifts.  At this point the only way we aren't getting married is if one of us dies or is seriously ill, and if that's the case I don't think I'll care about possibly offending someone whose gift I didn't return.</div>
