Not eating enough?

I have been tracking my calories on MyFitnessPal.com for a little over a year now (took a month off every once in a while to keep my sanity). MFP told me based on my activity level (moderate workouts w/ little to no activity at work - yay desk job), I should eat around 1200 calories a day, which seemed low to me but what do I know. While lurking around the H&F board yesterday, I was looking at what others, who like me had moderate workouts and light activity at work, and their calorie counts were in the 1700s a day. Anybody know where I could go to try to find an accurate calorie calculator? I'm starting to wonder if the plateau I've been at is caused by my not eating enough now. Any advice?

Re: Not eating enough?

  • Your plateau may totally be caused by not eating enough.  1200 with any kind of activity at all is too low.

I've found that the calculators on MyPlate (Livestrong.com) are pretty good and don't underestimate.

  • Thanks Raynes! I kind of thought it was low, but in my wedding-addled brain I didn't think twice and went with it.

  • If you really want to know for sure, you could rent/buy a bodybugg or gowearfit.  I know that you can rent them for a short period of time, just so you can tell what you're actually burning.

  • I have a bodybugg, and a desk job. If I don't exercise at all during the day, and I am at work, my totally calorie burn is around 2,000 calories for the day.

If I exercise, it goes way up of course. My goal on the calorie tracker for bodybugg is to burn 2450, and I can hit that when I do an hour of cardio, or strength plus extra cardio, or I have a busy day (off from work) when I am running around doing errands, etc. If I have a busy day running around (or cleaning the house, etc) PLUS an hour of working out, I break 3,000.

I know it varies by person and body size, so you have to take that into consideration, but just for a comparison, I'm 5'7 and weight 150. So you would probablt be burning less than me if you are smaller, more if bigger.

When I hit my goal (2450), I am supposed to eat 1950 calories for the day to have a 500 calorie deficit and lose a pound a week. Obviously if I don't work out and don't hit that number, I eat less to compensate. But 1200 sounds REALLY low. Even on a day with no activity, for me that wouldn't be enough calories.
