Marriage License Question

I went to town all and got my marriage license yesterday. The only thing I found odd was that no one asked me if I was changing my name when I get married, for some reason I felt like this should of come up. I am getting married in Branford and since i'm not from the area and have never been married before I'm not sure where to go with this question. Do I need to fill out additional paperwork?? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Marriage License Question

  • I got my license from Groton, and there's a line on the license that indicates what you would prefer your name to be after getting married, I think?

  • I got my license in Milford and they only asked if I was changing my name so they could give me a list of places to change my name with.  It wasn't any paperwork, just a list that said like: social security, DMV, health insurance, etc.  Nowhere on my license did it say anything about a name change.  I went to Social Security after I got my certified copy of my license and that's where I changed my name.

  • Yes, in CT you do not indicate on the marriage license if you are changing your name.  After the wedding you will need to go to the Social Security office first and change your name with marriage license proof, and then the DMV etc.

Thanks I feel a little better now!
  • We got our license in New Haven and they didn't mention anything about it, either.

Apparently, you can legally change your name even before you legally get married. My friend just did this--she brought the marriage license to the Social Security office and got it changed before the wedding so she would have one less thing to worry about after.
