So this maybe selfish but...

My dad tore his achilles tendon yesterday. He has to get surgery tomorrow and will be in a cast for 3 months, then he'll be in physical therapy for 3 months. I'm concerned about him, mostly because he's a mailman and runner so almost 6 months of no real physical activity may kill him.

Here's the selfish part...3 months from now (when he start pt), is one week before the wedding. I really worried that he won't be able to walk me down the aisle or dance with me at the reception. I know it's selfish and I'm being a baby, but I always imagined he'd do that and now I'm not sure. I'm just really sad and had to get that out.

Re: So this maybe selfish but...

  • My dad did the same thing a couple of years ago (ok like 15 but whatever)! The good news is, if he is still in a cast on your wedding day, they can put him in a walking boot so he can walk. He may also be able to get by with a cane. I know it's not ideal and I bet your dad is worried about the same thing.

  • you are so not being selfish! I'm sure everything will work out just the way you hoped!

FWIW, my dad (also a mailman...) had a double knee replacement last year and was walking within a few days.  It took a few weeks to get totally back to normal but you will be amazed at how quickly people heal.

  • I hope everything works out!  I'm sure your dad is worried about not being able to, but take it one day at a time...

  • Thanks ladies! We have a walker at home that was my grandpa's and he said if necessary he'll use that or I can wheel him down the aisle. haha. It's just stress that I really didn't need/want 100 days before the wedding.

Like you said, valerahd, he's a pretty active guy and I'm hoping it doesn't take long to get walking again....

  • Coming from the medical background, the fact that your dad was in such good shape will help him recover.  Yes, that tendon tear isn't the easiest thing to recover from (alot of rehab and stuff) but his health will help him alot.

Also, I'm sure he is worried just the same.  But most import thing, your dad will be there to "walk" you down the aisle in whichever way possible.  Some of the girls on this board or other boards don't have their fathers around anymore.  So whether he is walking, in a wheelchair, using a cane or a walker, he is there!!!

  • Aimee- in December 2010, my dad suffered a massive hemorrahgic stroke that left him almost paralyzed on his right side. He now walks, very slowly, with a quad cane. It is not how I imagined it, but he will be walking me down the aisle. No matter what, I'm sure you'll dad will find a way to get you down the aisle. Whether it be with crutches, a wheelchair, a cane, or a walking boot!

  • Walking or wheel chair im sure he will manage
  • You are not being selfish at all. I would feel the same way. It has always been my dream to have my dad walk me down and dance with me...I am his little girl, and its important.

Just like BritRN said, he will find and manage a way to walk you down the aisle and do your dance. I am sure it means a lot to him too.

I hope for a quick recovery and things work out well...sorry this happened to him!
