Rehearsal Dinner Question

so I am getting Married on a Friday and my venue will let you have the rehearsal on either Wednesday or Thursday. Which I would prefer Thursday. However, right now they are saying that they will only let me have it at either 3pm or 4pm because of the possibility of booking an event for later in the evening. The venue coordinator said that if two weeks before my wedding no event has been booked then I can have my rehearsal at either 5pm or 6pm. I would rather have this all figured out more than 2 weeks in advance but I also would like to have it around 5 or 6. So I'm confused as to what I should do!

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question

  • I would put it on the books for Thursday at 4pm. However let the site coordinator know that if the 5 or 6 are available then you would like to take one of those times. Just set your date with a tenative time.

Ugh! I thought we were mostly done with TK glitches. I saw your post before, but now I can't see it.
I agree with what Lisa said. I'd schedule the rehearsal for the earlier time that you can definitely book. If the later time is still available at two weeks out, then change it then if you still want it later.

ETA: And now I can see it again. TK is being wonky.

  • Can you only book it at 3 or 4 on both days?  If you can definitely book it later on Wednesday I might opt to do that just in terms of other people's schedules and work which might make it hard for folks to make it.
  • Could you do 6pm on Wednesday? Most of the people going to the RD are probably taking off from work on Friday for the wedding and if it's at 4pm on Thursday they would probably have to leave early or take another day off. I would do whatever would be easiest for the guests attending.

    <div>I like this option.</div><div>
</div><div>Do you have to have your rearsal dinner at the same place you're having your reception? It just seems like a lot of hassle when you could have the dinner somewhere else at the time and day you want it. If there's something I'm missing, like it being included in the venue rental, then that's a totally different story. I just don't know why your RD doesn't count as an "event" for the venue.</div>
  • How many people will need to be at the rehearsal? Are they local, OOT, mostly retired, mostly work, etc? I'm having a Friday wedding and skipping the rehearsal. But if I was having one, and those who are attending are mostly local and work until 5-6pm, I would do it wednesday and have it later do people don't have to leave work. However if most people are OOT and are coming in on Thursday I would just do it Thursday.

  • Is this for the actual rehearsal, or the dinner?

If it's the rehearsal, I've been told they usually go 2 hours; ours is only going to be about 1 hour.  Booking at 4 puts dinner between 5:30 and 6, which is really reasonable - then you have time to go home (or to your hotel) and relax and do any last-minute prep that needs to be done before the big day!

I agree with this and what Kelsey said.

  • I'm having a Friday wedding and the rehearsal is the Saturday before because the church couldn't accommodate us on Thursday night.

I think you should do Thursday at 4 and just be done worrying. It would drive me crazy wondering if things were changing 2 weeks before the wedding; I'd rather just have things set in stone.

I can only do 3 or 4 on Wednesday and Thursday. If two weeks before my wedding there are no events scheduled, I can choose a different time. My problem is that I am trying to coordinate with the resturant that we will be having the RD at as well. So I'm afraid if I wait then I will be scrammbling around to find a resturant if the one I am considering booking now gets booked in the mean time.

ETA: RD will only be about 20 people so on the small side. I wanted to do invites but unless I plan for 4 and stick with 4 that will be out of the question.
  • Unless you are having a huge rehearsal dinner, I would let people know the situation. Know which day you will be having it, but let them know the time is up in the air and then send out invites as soon as you know.

  • Oh...I get it now!  I would definitely go ahead and book the Thursday then and when you talk the restaurant ask them what their deadline is for you changing the time of your reservation.  They should hopefully be fairly flexible about it.
  • Okay...so this is for your actual rehearsal, not the dinner?

In that case, I say do what Shannon said.

well its both.. the 3 pm and 4 pm time frame is for the rehearsal to start and dinner will be after the rehearsal itself. So if we start the rehearsal at 4 then dinner will be at 5... and I was thinking about doing it later because people are already taking Friday off for the wedding so I'm trying to elimiate them having to leave work early the day before too.
  • I think you could still do invites...maybe put the time as 4pm and say something about it being tentative and then call everyone once it's totally final to let them know?  This way it gives people the heads up of the time; also where it's only 20ish people you could just do the invites with the 4pm time and then call them to let them know the situation if you wanted.
  • I would go with 4, if the rehersal runs an hour that brings you to 5, by the time you get to the restaurant & seated your probably looking at 5:30 or later, by the time you order it will be close to 6, then eat at earliest 6:30. If you go later it can get upwards of 8pm to eat, for me that would be too late.

  • Off topic, but Katie - have you decided what restaurant you're going with?  FI's parents haven't told us yet, but it's possible we'll wave to each other on Thursday night ;)
