Thyroid anyone?

Background: When I was a freshamn in college i found out i was hyperthyroid and had a large nodule (sp?) on half my thyroid. Doctors told me that i could have half my thyroid removed and most likely live normally without medication or any other thyroid problems for the rest of my life. I decided to have the surgery. At the  time I weighed about (I'm 5'6) 130lb and felt good.

Well I continued to get my thyroid levels check regularly and everything was fine until summer 2009. All the sudden I went from a size 6 to a size 11 in 2 months even though I had made no life style or diet changes. I then found out it was because my thyroid had gone severly hypo. I went from 130 to 147 (what i weigh now) in two months. (which i understand that 147 may not sound like alot to some people but thats a 17 lb weight gain in 2 months so it seemed like alot to me) It was very hard for me to be gaining weight due to something I felt I had no control over. I went on synthroid but it was still about 8 months before I had a blood test where my thyroid levels came back normal.

My thyroid levels have been fine for around a year now and I have come to except my body and feel more comfortable in my skin then I did in the months following the weight gain. However, I just can not loose this weight. I try eating more small meals, I try working out, it just doesn't come off.

I guess I'm just wondering if there is anyone else out there who has struggled with thyroid problems and has any good weight lose tips or anything that really helped them! Thanks!

Re: Thyroid anyone?

  • Are you on levothyroxine now? If you aren't, maybe you should be. Otherwise, I would recommend being extra careful with your diet (like no eating after dinner, lots of veggies and fruit). And, make sure to not slack on exercise.
  • Yea i'm on synthroid. the one you mentioned is the generic and for whatever reason i wasn't responding well to the generic. I have an aunt who can't take the generic either.

I have another blood test next week and im crossing my fingers that my levels are fine!
  • I'm not able to take the generic either. I went off synthroid for about a year because I lost my health insurance and it cost too much to get a private plan. I gained about 20 pounds. I'm back on it but I exercise regularly and eat healthy. The weight is coming off slowly but surely. Just stick with it and make sure your dosage is correct.
  • I agree with the others.. Just make sure you stick with it and you'll have to be more strict that others are. It's very hard, but it will come off eventually if you're persistent..

  • I agree with the pps.  Keep an eye on your levels (at least twice a year blood testing) & try to stick with healthy eating/exercise.  I don't understand the original dr's comment about not needing meds.  Once your thyroid is removed (or radiated like mine was) you NEED to be on the meds the rest of your life.  Unless I'm wrong, but this is what my Doc explained to me years ago when I had mine done.

  • I also found out my freshman year of college. I did not have to have surgery, but my grandmother did. My mother also has hypothyroid. We are both on synthroid as we were not reacting the same on the generic. I get my blood tested at least every six months, but at times every 3 months if my dosage is changed.
The weight defintely comes off slower, but with healthy eating and exercise it is possible. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble, it may be that your dosage needs to be adjusted.
  • I don't have a thyroid problem, but thought I might mention the shake that I have twice a day. It is called "Ultrameal" (by metagenics) and it was developed for people with metabolic disorders. The only way to get it is through a clinic, but I think the website can let you know if there is a doctor in your area that supplies it. It is a little pricey, but I have seen some amazing results (I've lost 14.5# since October 22...and its good for you!). It might be worth at least looking into.

I only had half my thyroid removed because the nodule was only on half of it. Your thyroid can function normally if you only have half of it.

I get mine checked every 3 months right now and its been normal the past couple of times. I'm due to get my levels checked again in 2 weeks.
  • Hi there,

I have hypothyroid and have read that thyroid diseases (an autoimmune disorder) has been linked to wheat/gluten intolerances. I follow a wheat free/gluten free diet and it isn't as scary as you might think and is healthier because I am eating more complex carbs and fiber. I take armour thyroid (pig hormone) because that is the only one that seems to work for me after trying the others.

The problem I've found with doctors is that they don't request a full thyroid panel normally they just check your TSH levels and not your T3 and T4 levels (like uptake).

    Good luck!
  • I found out 3 years ago I have hachimoto disease with my thyroid. Hachimoto disease is a condition were the antibodies in your system attack and eat away at your thyroid) My mom and grandma both have thyriod problems (although they do not have hachimoto disease) it was destined that I was going to have it too since it ran in my family.

I do gained 40 pounds since learing about my thyriod problem and it takes a long time to get it off. It seriously sucks. I am on synthriod because I cannot take gerneric.

I get my thyriod checked with an ultrasound every 6 months and get blood work done also. Everything seems to running smoothly so to speak.

The only weight loss program that has sorta worked for me is weight watchers. But it took me almost 1 year with regular excersise to take off 15 pounds.

Hang in there, be strong the weight and everything will come off just have to be patient.

Missfarar: thanks! That sounds like something I would definetly be interested in!

Bells: So sorry you are having to go through all of that. Thyroid problems also run in my family. All three of my dads sisters have thyroid problems. I pray that gene doesn't get passed down to my future children!

  • I just recently (about a month and a half ago) found out I have hypothyroidism.  I'm taking levothyroxine and am due to have my levels checked again in about a month and a half.  I went up three sizes in about a year, I was extremely cold all of the time, and I was sleepy 24/7.  For some reason, it never occured to me that these things were potentially related!

Since I've been on my medication, I've had more energy and have generally felt a lot better.  I used to have lots of digestive issues, but those are now under control.  I started doing Weight Watchers this week and am hoping that I will see some results.  Before I was diagnosed, I could work out and eat well and not see any results, so I'm hoping that has changed.

    Good luck with everything!

  • adunn- Good luck with everything! I'm suprised your doctors didnt recognized those symptoms sooner! I totally know what you mean about being cold all the time. Before I got on synthroid I would litterally wear my north face jacket to an outdoor baseball game in the middle of summer! I'm sure everyone thought I was crazy but I was seriously freezing lol
  • I take levothyroxine as my thyroid is very unstable.  Sometimes im good and sometimes all i want to do is sleep.  I also found Herbalife.  Since I have been on it alot of other health issues have been resolved and if I forget my thyroid medication it doesnt affect me.

In July I tried on a 16W wedding dress and it fit pretty well.  In December it was so big on me that clamps had to be used.  (It was the exact same dress that I am using for an example here if you are wondering.)

  • I've had hypo for about a year, I was one of those gained some weight but thought it was my freshmen 15, well it wasn't. I went from 120 tiny little thing to 148 in a few months (I'm 5'3" so it wasn't the best thing and i didn't want to buy new cloths). I also have a family history of heart disease so of course my doc went through everything and then was like "Oh you have a goiter!" Once on medication I actually came down to 140 pretty quickly. But what worked best for me was the 17 day diet, I was VERY loose with the directions but after the second phase I was down to 132, and I've been here for about 6 months. I may try it again but it made sense to me.
