bringing dress

I am curious how everyone else took their dress? I called Hawaiian airlines but all they would do is read me the dementions. and seeing how i have a lot somewhat poofy dress I am having a hard time figuring out if I am going to end up with a problem. What did you girls do?

Re: bringing dress

  • I carried mine on.....for the first flight, the attendant put it in the closet at the front of the plane for me. For the second (long) flight, I had to put it in the overhead compartment.....it stretched across three of the spaces, on top of other people's luggage. It was fine, except I almost had a heart attack after a guy opened the compartment to get something from his bag....my dress fell out a little, and he shoved and scrunched it back in really hard.

  • My experience was similar to Andrea's.  I flew Alaska Air from Alaska to Honolulu and they put my dress in the First Class closet.  There was another bride on my flight with a poofy dress and hers was in the same closet as mine.  For the short hop from Honolulu to Maui I put my dress in the overhead compartment on top of some bags.  Dress came through fine and wrinkle free!

  • I live in LA so I thought it would be safe enough to ship. I FedEx'd it to my mom's cousin who lives there. If she wasn't there I probably would have sent it to my coordinator. I was nervous, but it got there on time, & she hung it up as soon as it arrived :)

NOTE: If I lived in the middle of the country I probably wouldn't have done that. Too many stops for it to get lost at. I probably would have gently folded it & put it into a carryon. I read that one gal did those air removal bags that shrink down, packed it in a carry on & that worked for her.
  • You can just carry it on. The airlines to Hawaii are really use to it. Other ladies have folded it into their carry-on. Brea did the vacuum bags, put it in her carry-on and then had it steamed once she got there to take all of the wrinkles out.
  • We flew Air Canada from Vancouver to Maui and they hung my dress up in the cockpit!! Apparently that airplane didn't have any closeets, even in first class or for the flight attendants to store their personal belongings so they offered the cockpit! They treated us like gold, unfortunately the flight was full so no upgrade to first class but they gave us a bottle of wine and took really great care of us!

  • I'm the one that brought the dress on it my carry on. It was SO nice not to have to drag it around the airports in a garment bag, especially with layovers and long ones at that. It was definitely wrinkly when we got there but I'm sure it would have needed to be steamed either way. I also called Vanessa before hand to make sure she could get the wrinkles out before I did it. I'm not sure if it's okay to do with all styles of dresses but it was perfectly fine with mine which was a mermaid style with lots of tulle in the bottom.
  • I smushed mine into my carryon rolling bag, and David's bridal in Hawaii steamed it for free when I got to Hawaii! I was going to carry the garment bag, but it probably still would have needed to be steamed, and I also thought having it in the rolling bag was much easier than dragging around a big garment bag.

  • I folded mine in 1/2 length wise, rolled it and put it in a carry on suitcase right before we left for the airport. We got there 1 day before the wedding with about 10 hours of travel time in the suitcase so I did hour intervals of it hanging in the bathroom with the hot water running to steam it out a few times throughout the day. I had one or two stubborn wrinkles so I ended up putting a heavy bath towel on top of just the outer layer of dress and ironed on the towel- the dress was perfect for the wedding. It was poofy and satin..... No carrying around the airport, no professional expensive steaming.
