Just Engaged and Proposals

Venting Session

So I have been engaged for six months. FI got my princess cut solitare ring from kay jewelers. Worst mistake ever. I love my ring, but in September the diamond fell out. I brought it in, they had to send it out and it took two weeks to be repaired. I am a student, I dont do anything crazy with my hands hitting them off anything to make the diamond loose. i was in class today and noticed that once again the diamond is loose. i'm furious. My mom has been married for 25 years and never once had a problem with her engagement ring. I've been engaged for 6 months and I'm going to go have to have it repaired again! Ahh i just want to scream. Fi and i are now considering resetting it all together now, but will that actually help? I guess i'm just super thankful that I have no lost the diamond. I would be heart broken if I did.

Well vent over, thanks for reading :) Remeber don't buy from kay jewelers

Re: Venting Session

  • My E-ring is not from Kay but I would never give them a dime after a terrible experience with a diamond bracelet.  The diamonds fell out 4 times in 6 months!  Each time they had the braclet for 2 weeks so I wore it for a total of 3.5 months. I wanted my money back and they refused.

  • That sucks. You might want to find a local jeweler to take care of it for you. I mean, it should just be that the prongs need to be tightened, but the jeweler should be able to tell you.
  • Really? This makes me nervous. FI and I were lookin at rings from Kays. (not offically engaged yet) I would hate to go through what your going through! :(

  • Work with a local jeweler to have the prongs adjusted.  They may need to be shortened, too.  Don't go back to Kay's.

Yeah, I agree - don't take it back to Kays.

My ring had a loose diamond for about six weeks and was fixed three different times.  But, my ring is from the 1940s and had very old prongs.  They wanted to just re-tip the prongs, but in the end they had to rebuild the top of the setting.  It's great, now!

We tried two different jewelers before it came back perfect.  Look around for someone else!
  • I would make Kays pay for the other jeweler to fix it. That is the type of remedy you would get in court.

Look at the warranty/contract/any paperwork Kays provided. Also is the ring paid for or is it on a payment plan? (I hope it is paid off, but lots of people do put things like Erings on payment plans & that could effect what you can do to fix this issue.) Talk to Kays about what they can do it fix this issue and make sure you start getting everything in writing (Like what was wrong with the prong).  If you do go to another jeweler, understand that might effect the type of policy/warranty Kays did provide. I'm not staying stay with Kays if they are not fixing the problem, but just understand what happens if you use a different jeweler.

I hope you have an insurance policy on the ring (If not get one asap).

I was just going to suggest this, that if you haven't already got your ring insured, then go ahead and do so.  FI brought my ring home on a Saturday had it insured that following Monday, and he didn't propose  till weeks later.  When you shop for jewelry insurance make sure you ask them the details of what is covered and how to make claims.  Also what will happen if you have lost it, will they cut you a check or pay for a comparable ring.  There's jewelers mutual I think, I have mine insured through State Farm as a rider policy on our home owners insurance.

Good luck with Kay's, I wouldn't have purchased from them after having problems with a locket that was from there.  It was just a simple gold locket and I had problems.
  • I have heard some bad things about Kay's, but I have a few pieces of jewelry from there (including my e-ring), and I havn't had any problems with any of my jewelry and they have always had good customer service with me (ofcourse, that can very from store-to-store). I am having an "issue" with my e-ring, you could say - I noticed shortly after I got it that the center diamond in a 3 stone crown setting was a bit off center (viewing from the profile). They sent it out to the jeweler but it turns out it is just the cut of the diamond (lets say they shouldn't have selected this diamond for this ring if that is the case) so it can't be centered w/out making the top wrong too. However, they are going to exchange my ring for a new one, and it is even out of the 90-day exchange time limit. So, all in all I have been pleased *knock on wood*. I understand your frustration and I am sorry to hear about your situation. Good luck!

  • Fi and I shopped at Zales. we looked at kays and the sales ppl there were really pushing and were really all over the place. I had two different ppl handing me rings to try on. The sales lady told me about the diamond replacement policy thing but i totally would shop at Zales. I had one sales lady who helped us for an hour and a half just trying on rings they were so friendly and helpful!!! Ive heard too many ppl complain about kays so we decided not to shop there!

  • aaahhhh! I'm terrified now! My E-ring is from Kays, I haven't had any real problems with them, there was a scratch in the gold when it came back from being resized but that's about it. The sales people there are so nice we started looking at wedding bands through them too.

Yikes.... I hope your ring is fixed asap. =(

  • I had a ring from Kay's a long time ago and I must say not impressed in the least. To me their e-rings all look the same nothing that would catch my eye. And the quality is def. NOT there. The ring I had was "14K white gold" well it is now tarnished.
