Passport Name Change

I know a few people have done this lately.  How long does it take to get your passport back? (you have to send in your current one?).  You have a year to change your name, right?  If all your other ID's have your new name, can you still book and travel with a passport under your maiden name?

thanks!

I sent mine out 12/29 and just got it back this weekend.  Speedy!  I got my first new passport just to go on our honeymoon, so I was able to get the new one with my married name (w/in the first year) for free!  Yes, you have to send your current passport away with your marriage certificate.  Apparently the processing office is in Philadelphia which is probably why they were so quick.

It sucks:  I've had my current passport since 12/2008, and since it's been over a year and I have to get a passport with my married name, I will have to fork over money.

Hmm...I wonder if I have to pay!  I can't remember, but I think I renewed my old passport after it expired in summer 2009.  I thought the "free for a year" policy related to your wedding date.

Oh, I thought it related to the date of your passport.

Yeah, I think if it's your 1st passport you can change it within the first year free.  If it's more than a year old, you have to pay the regular adult processing fees to change it.  At least that's what I get from the website....

<div>Musicaheals is correct.  I have to pay for mine as well since I had renew last Feb and it's not like I could wait due to living here.  Really pisses me off esp. b/c the price just went up.  </div><div>The free for a year thing is because many people get their first one to go on their HM.  </div><div>
</div><div>You can travel under your maiden name even if your other ID is changed b/c the airport does not look at any other ID, unless you are cool like me and have a visa.  ;-)  The people at immigration don't give a crap about your dr. license or cc.  </div><div>
</div><div>I got mine in a week last year.  Which involved me mailing it to the Embassy, them mailing it to the US, making the passport, flying it back, all in 5 days.  I picked it up in person because I was going to get my visa for India.  Going to the Embassy is hard core as well, there are men with machine guns outside.  Which is weird given Bobbies don't carry guns.  </div>

It doesn't have to be your firs passport, it just has to be a new one.

It is now $110 to renew, it was $75 last year, sonofabitch!  And I have to get a new visa this year, which is about $1200.  Being an immigrant is super expensive.

    Holy crap, $1200??

    I know right!

We spent about $3000 2 years ago between visas, fees for expeditors, and flights to the US for me because I had to be in the US to apply.

Citizenship will be in the summer of 2012 and it's 1500 pounds I think.  One of the big reasons I'm doing it is so I will never have to deal with immigration again. As if I leave the country and don't have citizenship I lose my status and would have to go through the process again.

Then of course we will have to go through this again for Matt in the US...

Oh, plus I have to pay to take the Life in the UK test before July when my visa expires.

Darn... I'll have to pay to get mine changed.  I'll have missed the year deadline by 4 months.

NCV--that really sucks.  When my MOH lived in Ireland, they kept screwing up her Visa.  They wouldn't send it to her, but she was enrolled in school, so until she had her Visa, she basically couldn't leave the country.  Couldn't even go to Belfast.  And then her purse was stolen, and they threw it away, including her Visa... and she had to get another one.  I don't know if she had to pay every time, but I know it was a giant pain in the butt.

Paprika: I like it when you burp in my ear. It really turns me on.

I got my new passport in the mail today :)  I sent it out on December 29th so that didn't take too long.  Now I'm just waiting to get back my marriage cert.  I hate not having that.

Do you have to send your original stamped marriage certificate, or can you send a copy that's been certified by a notary (we had all our copies certified by a notary, about 30 copies, just in case, since I have all my medical stuff going on)?
  • edited December 2011
MBR - I think you can have a certified copy.  I would call them first though.  You don't want to do everything and have them reject it.

I'm almost sure you can have a certified copy.  We didn't have one and I only had 2 days left to do it by the time I got my sh!t together.  Double check, but I think it's okay.
