Stressed about Songs...

First, I have no idea what I am going to do for out first dance. I think i will be so awkward that people are watching me and FI dancing and we both suck at dancing. Anyone have any thoughts on Sweet Pea by Amos Lee? Its such a short song so I think I am OK with that.

Father-daughter dance I cannot find a song that fits me and my dad. I dont want it to be sappy. By dad loves the Beach Boys so i was thinking maybe we could do a song? Anyone have ideas?

What types of songs does the Bridal party come into? Is it different songs for Father/Mother,RB, FG, and Bridal Party? We were thinking of doing traditional Romanian music for this since My FI is from there.

Also, cutting the cake song? Should these songs be like formal or what? Is there a guide on the Knot for all this?

Re: Stressed about Songs...

  • Take a deep breath.  There's really no wrong answer, you pick music you like and suits your style.

I'm not familiar with "Sweet Pea".  Don't pick it just because it's the shortest thing you can find!  You don't have to have a "spotlight" for the entirety of the song for your first dance.  Pick a song that you and your FI like and has meaning to you, then tell the DJ that after a certain amount of time (maybe 1.5-2 minutes) he/she should invite the wedding party and/or the rest of the guests to join you.  (We danced to Chicago's "You're the Inspiration", we had about 1.5 minutes choreographed, then the WP joined us for the rest of it.)

As for father-daughter, I've seen people recommend the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows".  If that's too sappy for you, maybe something like "In My Life" or "Here Comes the Sun" - both by the Beatles.

Entrance music is typically upbeat and energetic. You can have one song for everyone, or different songs for parents, WP, and you - again, it's up to you.  (We used "Oh What A Night" by Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons for parents and BP, and "In the Stone" by Earth Wind & Fire for us.) If you and your FI want to use traditional Romanian music here, go for it.  Just talk to your DJ to make sure he/she has or can get what you need.

The song for cutting the cake does not have to be formal, it is usually fun and playful.  We used James Taylor's "How Sweet It Is".   There are a ton of suggestions in this link:

    Good luck and don't stress!

  • We're doing one dance for the bride  and groom and have decided not to do any others.  We want our guests to start enjoying the party instead of having to sit through many dances watching us.

I had no idea what song we were going to use until we went to a jazz show and heard a song that was just "us".   Maybe you could play some songs and find one that means something to you both?
