Name Change Help - PLEASE!!!

Please help, I'm completely lost when it comes to changing my name! I only have 13 days to go to my wedding. I was told the courthouse would have a checklist, but we are doing a destination wedding.  :-(  I would appreciate any info. / help anyone has. Thanks so much Knotties!

You can't change your name until after you are married.   There is no reason to worry about this right now.

    What?  Take a deep breath.

After you're married, your marriage certificate will be filed with some jurisdiction.  Because DH and I were married in the same county where we live, this was pretty straightforward.  Not sure exactly how this works for a DW, but I'm sure your site can tell you.  You have a coordinator there, right?  Talk to him/her.

Once the marriage certificate is filed (this can take from days to weeks--ours was 2-3 weeks), you need to request a copy.  This is the documentation that you need to change your name with social security.  Everything else depends on this, so you need to start with them.

Once your new social security card is updated, you can take that and your marriage cert to the DMV to get a new license, and you can get a new passport issued with your new name.  Once you have new ID, you can tackle mundane tasks like your cell phone bill, bank accounts, library card, etc.

Easy peasy.  Calm the eff down.

depending on where you are getting married, you may legally need to get married in the US before the DW. You should be more concerned about making sure your marriage is legit rather than changing your name.

in terms of changing your name, try google. the process changes state to state.

Thanks Heffalump! We are getting married in St. Croix which is US territory and I'm being told we are getting our marriage license before we leave along with copies. I have googled checklists and haven't found much help there. Looks like I'll be starting with my SS card then.
