Civil Ceremony at our Location?

Does anyone know how I can go about finding a judge to marry me? I don't want a religious ceremony at all and just want a quick civil service. Please help as I am clueless on how to get a judge who does... sidework?

Re: Civil Ceremony at our Location?

  • Where are you getting married?  This is an international board, and each state has their own rules.  For example, I live in Georgia, but got married in Florida, and the only requirement for the officiant was a notary.  In Georgia, it's a bit different. I would start with the website over whatever state/county you're getting married in--sometimes they have a list of officials.  Also, even if you don't want a religious ceremony, you may consider a Unitarian Universalist minister.  They will marry atheists, agnostics, Pagans, humanists, and yes, even Christians :-)  They are the most accepting church I've ever attended (I'm not a Christian) and can tailor the ceremony to fit your needs.

  • I live in Illinois and have checked my county's website but they only provide information on the actual marriage license.  Thanks for the information!
  • You may also wish to post this on your local board, some of the ladies there may have suggestions for you.  Good luck!

  • We had a friend of ours ordained through an online church.  In our state he didn't need to be licensed in this state.  Check out http://www.ulchq.com/ if you like that idea.Call your local circuit clerk's office.  They can tell you the requirements.  Also, they usually have a list of judges or JOPs that can perform the ceremony.
  • I would call your county clerk-- a lot of times they have a judge (or elected official) perform ceremonies once a week in their office so they should have a couple of contacts for people who wish to hire them for an off-site ceremony.
