Hand Cancelling?

Another invite question!  Is anyone hand cancelling their invites?  Or anyone who has done it?  Did they end up going through the machines anyway??

Re: Hand Cancelling?

  • I asked for mine to be hand cancelled, they said it wasn't a problem but I havent asked or seen any of the invites that have been sent.

I had 2 invites destroyed by their machine (we sent some OOT guests invites last week). I explained that to them, and asked them if they could hand cancel. When they realized they were wedding invitations, they said it was not a problem.

Funny...I was just thinking about this this morning. What exactly is it? I've seen it discussed on the boards before but don't know exactly what it is.

    Thanks!
  • Thanks!  I will definetely ask them on Monday to do it when I mail them out!  We have regular sized envelopes but I still don't want to take a chance.
  • Hand cancelling is when the people at the post office physically stamp the cancelling stamp on the envelope instead of having a machine do it.  It costs more, but it's usually done by request or if the envelopes are a size or shape that doesn't fit into the machines.  If you specifically request hand cancelling and tell them it's for wedding invitations they'll be fine with it, but just know that you will get charged more.

I asked the postmaster about hand cancelling my invitations and he told me it wouldn't be a problem. They ended up going through the machine anyway and were never hand cancelled which made me angry. It's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it was frustrating.

  • We asked for our invitations to be hand canceled, but I don't know if they actually were.
  • I read that some post offices let you stamp them yourself, I guess it differs from each one.  i will definetely ask if I can do that.
  • The benefit to square envelopes is that they can't be put through the sorting machines.  You pay a little extra in postage, but it's worth it.  :)

<div>I've never heard of anyone being charged for requesting hand cancellation.  It's a service the Post Office offers.  All you need to pay is traditional postage - however much your letter requires.</div>
  • I'm just going to drop my invitiations in the blue box.
  • Well I went this morning and the lady said she would be happy to hand cancel them and there was no extra charge :)  Yay!!!
  • I hand cancelled my own and they sent them through the machines anyway.  They looked very messy!
  • MissRachel- I am worried about that!  I figured it wouldn't hurt to at least try and if they get sent through, they get sent through.  I text my sister and told her to send me a pic of her invite when she gets it!  Lol.
