passed hor d'oeuvres or stations?

tyring to get a general consensus before committing to anything with the caterer. Im not sure which is prefered by most people, butler passed hor d'ouevres or serve yourself stations for cocktail hour? Planning to have an hours worth of hosted bar for cocktail hour so which is a better way to handle the pre dinner snacking?

I typically prefer stations but you could always do a mix of passed and stations.

Edit:  If you do decide to do passed apps, make sure to have your caterer supply all the different types of apps on each of the serving trays.  So if you have 3 different apps to choose from make sure that all 3 apps are present on the serving tray.  I hate when I go to a wedding and they have passed apps and only one type of app comes by.

  • I think it depends on the type of apps. I prefer cold apps to be at stations, but hot apps, I like to be passed so they aren't all gone in 5 minutes.

<div>Exactly this.  Plus, I went to a wedding where there was a food station in the middle and it was a bottleneck.  Very hard to get to and people bumping into each other.  </div>
  • i was just at a function last night and the servers came around and passed out some apperitzers to everyone they did this for about 30 mins until everyone had something then they placed it all on a table, it worked out well because no one was rushing while they were placing food down because they were hungry because they had just had a thing or two to nibble on
  • I'm going through this right now too, so thanks for asking.  What I hadn't thought of until i started talking to the venue manager is that some foods do not hold up as well in stations, and are better passed around quickly, while other foods are just as good either way.

Personally I like stations better.  I always seem to miss out on passed hor d'oeuvres.  At stations people are more comfortable taking as much as they want.  Plus you might be able to save money on less staff if you don't pass them around.  And then you can buy more food.

    I'm hungry :P
