Instead of hijacking the other post...

I'm a second year; in my program its only one year of classes (well, 18 credits) then your second year is cumulative exams. The second Saturday of every month we have an exam, with either an announced or unannounced topic. Each exam is worth a max of 3 pts and you need a total of 10 pts to be done.

Maybe this is the same as a Pre-candidacy exam? I feel like every program has a different name for everything.  Within 6 months after finishing cumes we have our first committee meeting and officially become "doctoral sustaining" students.

  • It sounds kind of like a candidacy exam; my program doesn't do written exams, just a thesis proposal and oral exams (which is just a one-time thing for a few hours).  I've heard of other schools doing written and oral exams, so I thought maybe that's what you were talking about.  And 'doctoral sustaining' sounds the same as 'advanced to candidacy' to me.  In my program, that means you've finished with classes, passed your oral exams, and are now just doing research for your thesis.

  • No, we do not do oral exams. The biology department at my school does, however biochemistry is run out of the chem department so we don't.  Up until a few years ago there was a language requirement where you needed to translate a paper in German. I'm glad thats gone!
