Baby Shower Games-NWR

I hate shower games of any type. I am co-hosting a baby shower for one of my good friends. The mommy-to-be has requested that we find 2 or 3 games to play at her shower. I am horrible with this, does anyone have any favorite baby shower games?

I'm not a fan of anything with toilet paper, diaper games or anything scatalogical. And many people just don't like games at showers, period.

OP, ask your friend what kind of games she has in mind. Maybe play board games instead?

I hate games in general too. I don't like anything that is embarrassing to the guest of honor, or the guests. Bingo is easy enough, and gives the guests something to do while opening presents. I also like asking guests to bring a baby photo of themselves and trying to guess who is who.

I swear to god, if someone does the stupid melted chocolate bars in diapers game, I leave.

Embarrassing games are the worst. I had one done to me at my baby shower by my cousins. It was awful.

My sister made a word scramble and fill in the blank type game people could fill out as they ate, and a game where everyone got a safety pin at the beginning and everyone someone said a certain word it was taken away by whoever caught it, and the person with the most at the end won a prize. Those were fairly uninvasive and if people didn't want to play they didn't necessarily have to.

You can hang up an ultrasound picture with arrows pointing to different body parts, and people guess what is what. It's something that people can do at their leisure during the party, and then you see who has the most right answers at the end.

I've also seen a race where guests (not the mom-to-be) chug mimosas out of baby bottles, which I thought was a little weird.

The last baby shower I went to, they played the chocolate in the diaper one, and I was "forced" to play. I was literally dragged up by the mother of the mom-to-be, and rather than make a scene, I went ahead and played. I hate forced games and socialization. That's the only game I even remember, other than something with clothespins that you had to clip on your clothes and if you said "baby" or something and someone heard you, they could take your clothespin. The object was to have the most. I think those were the rules. I made sure to lose immediately on pulse just to get rid of my stupid clothespin that was leaving a mark on my blouse.

Do baby gift bingo, it requires the least amount of effort as you just check off things while watching the mother open gifts. Get a few little prizes for the winners. And do the baby name clothes pin game, where no one can say baby. These seem to be the least intrusive or socially awkward games. Also I have to ask, why is the mom to be requiring things at the shower she is being so generously offered? I would tell her you are handling the planning and all she has to do is not worry and show up.

One baby shower game that I don't think is too obnoxious or embarrassing is one I recently played at a baby shower. We had necklaces made out of little blue plastic safety pins and yarn. If you said the word baby and someone caught you, you had to give them your necklace. The person with the most necklaces at the end won a little prize. Then, if people don't want to play, they can just get out and not really try, and it isn't something you have to get up and do in front of everyone.

Mommy-to-be found a game where you fill a baby bottle with M&Ms, (or in her case jelly beans because that's what she wants), everyone guesses how many jelly beans are in the bottle, the winner gets the bottle and a gift. She also likes the idea of bingo.Nobody has to feel forced to play either of them. Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I think the diaper with the chocolate sounds gross lol.

I'm not a shower game person, but when my sister was doing my shower she asked or some ideas.

Please do not to the poop game, or the game where you take string and try to guess how fat the pregnant lady is.

We ended up doing gift bingo, and then my sister made up questions for FI and I to answer. It was everything from "Who will baby go to to borrow money when she's older?" to "Who will freak out the most at the hospital?" to "Who will help baby with math homework?" Whoever matched our answers the most won.

I went to a baby shower once where we played Price is Right with baby items. There were 10 or so items, anything from bibs to a pack of bottles to an outfit, and we had to guess which price went with what. The person who got the most right won and the mom to be kept all the items. That was fine.

We played a baby version of Scattergories. The cattergories were like something a woman shouts during labor, brand name of a baby product, and other stuff pertaining to babies or parenting. We also played a memory game. Baby items were left out on a table and we were given a few minutes to look at them. Then we got ten minutes to answer a sheet of questions about the items on the table like how many ounces are in the baby cream, what color are the spoons, etc... The mother got to keep the items after the game as a gift.

I like the bingo game. Gives guests something to do during gift opening, which can be kind of boring anyway. Less forced oohing and ahhhing over yet another tiny onesie...

For something not yet suggested, there is a game where you have to come up with the name of the parent/baby for various animals. Like goose - gosling. Tiger - cub. Swan - cygnet. Deer - fawn. Cat - kitten. Opossom - joey. etc etc. Using the weirder ones to make it more competitive.

Because I work in the mother-baby field I get invited to / wind up helping with a lot of showers. My personal favorites of the games / activities I've seen --

"Sweet Time of Life"
Give guests a worksheet with the clues printed on it and lines to write in their answers (1/2 a sheet works for < 15 guests). Display the candy bars (reading off the names helps, esp. with a large group) and guests get a set amount of time to match the candy bar to the clue. Examples: boys' names = MIke and Ike, girl's name = Baby Ruth, twins = Twix, triplets = Three Musketeers, baby laundry = Mounds, grandparents = Lifesavers, baby's hands / feet / face = Kissables, , spit-up on clothes = Milk Duds, "the pitter patter of little feet" = Symphony, etc. I usually add "Whoever actually thought these up" = Nerds because I don't mind laughing at myself a bit. After the given time, you read out the correct answers, and anyone who got them all right gets their first pick of the candy, then whoever was next closest gets to choose, etc. until all the candy is gone.

It works pretty well because no one gets put on the spot, it doesn't mess up the game if someone doesn't want to play (I've seen people play in pairs) and the prizes are built into the game prep.

Baby Bingo
Prepare bingo sheets ahead of time (I usually do 3 variations, so everyone's page isn't identical) and fill the squares in with identifiers like: "born in the spring/summer/fall/winter", "is an only child", "is currently pregnant", "slept with a favorite blanket or stuffed animal as a child", "has brothers but no sisters" (or vice versa), "is the oldest/youngest/middle child", "is part of a set of multiples" ... fun ones include: "will sing the 'Barney' song for you", "has ever eaten a jar of baby food", "has changed />100 diapers", "has gone outside to blow bubbles / played with PlayDoh in the past month" ... you get the idea. Pass them out as people arrive (with a pen/pencil) and it's the usual bingo concept from there (each person can only sign one square on each sheet). It's a nice ice-breaker/ mingly game, but again, no one has to play. Prizes for the first (or first 3) to get bingo.

Decorating Onesies
This one I wasn't a fan of when I first heard the idea, but it was the head-planner's idea and so we went with it. It actually turned out really well. She provided white onesies in a variety of sizes, some long, some short-sleeved, and packages of fabric markers. During the shower, guests had the opportunity to custom-decorate the onesies with a drawing, picture, wording, etc. After the shower, she used her iron to heat-set the marker.

To be honest, I thought we'd have a LOT of onesies left over! Not everyone made one, but people really got into it and some made several. And they looked good! They were beautiful, creative and sweet (one had well-wishes for the baby in Japanese characters), and the mom is still raving about how much she enjoys them. She mostly uses them under a sleeper or footie outfit, and she loves the individuality.

A few things we learned: 1. provide rectangles of strong cardboard to slip into the onesie so that the marker doesn't bleed to the back; half-sheet size clipboards (the cheap ones from Walmart) work the best. 2. Don't try to do the ironing part during the shower -- takes too long and having a hot iron on a wobbly board in the middle of a group of people is not a good idea. 3. Don't get newborn size onesies. Everyone buys baby outfits in the smallest sizes, and this baby, for instance, was out of the newborn size in a week. 4. I personally think it would have been nice to have a few onesies that were in pastel shades (pink, blue, yellow or light green), rather than all white.

Not a game but something I like. Get a pretty looking blank book, like a journal and have everyone right their parenting advice in it. At the end of the shower, the mom to be has a parenting book.

Of course if the guests mostly don't have kids you can skip that one.
