Cake vs. Cupcakes? Who to use?

Hi ladies!  I was wondering if anyone had any info on cake options vs. cupcakes -- what's the usual cost difference, if any?  We are having approx. 250 people (ouch) and I would love to do sheet cake or cupcakes to try to save some money.

Anyone have suggestions on who to use for either the cake or cupcakes or both?  Both Anita Kline and Piece of Cake in the Short North are booked for my date unfortunately, so we're looking into other options.  So far, I have appts. with The Cake Studio in Powell and The Suisse Shop on Polaris Pkwy (both recommended by Anita, which I really appreciated).  I also saw Bella Luna in a post a few threads back, so I think that I may try them as well.  Thanks so much for your help!!

I met with Cindy from Enticing Icings, her cakes were delicious. I don't remeber her price difference between cake and upcake. She does sheetcakes as well.

Through an internet search I found Cindy at Enticing Icing.  We did a tasting with her and fell in love on the spot.  Her cakes are around $3.95 per person and that includes filling, any flavor cake and fondant.  If you want butter cream icing it's even cheaper.  If you decide to book with her please let her know Terra Thompson (from the Terra and Steve Wedding) referred you :-)

I'm using Michelle Sauer of Sauer Cakes. She is 4.00 a slice for any fillings, flavors etc. I wanted to save monies by going the sheetcake route, so Fi and I talked with her and for 50 bucks she is going to make a "display cake" (a cake that she can use again) with a cut-able top layer for display purposes. No one will know the difference. Then the staffers will take away the cake to the back "to be cut up", but really we will have sheet cake in the back of the same flavors to help cut costs. So instead of paying 750 for cake to feed 200-230 people, it's only going to cost us around 400-450. SCORE. And her flavors are really awesome and delicious too. When we went for a tasting, she had cupcake versions of her cake flavors and all her icings and fillings that we wanted to try in little cups so we could mix and match flavors that we wanted to try together for the perfect combinations! She also does do cupcakes too!

We did a 3 tier cake. We used Elegant Icings. She is about 40 minutes west of Columbus but will travel.

I really liked Christina of Bella Luna, but I couldn't see paying that much for a cake. The tasting was delicious and she does great work, but $700 for a 3 tier wedding cake was a bit much if you ask me. We got our cake for about half of that. And it tasted great and we were very pleased.

I am using SweetLee Yours  in Westerville. Brandi is really sweet, and the prices can't be beat.  She does cupcakes 2 dozen for $22.  If you can filling it's 2 dozen for $26..only a little over a dollar per cupcake and they taste great!

You could also check out Alice's Piece of Cake. I met with her for a cake tasting and she was really nice and her cake was delicious (however I decided to go with Anita Kline). Her website is: www.alicespieceofcake.com

I'm using The Cake Studio in Powell and Katie is one of the nicest people you'll meet.  She works out of her home and her cakes are delicious!  We ended up going with the Cassata cake (fresh strawberries with strawberry cream in the middle with buttercream icing).  It's sooooo good!  Unfortunately, I can't give you any pricing info since my venue includes a cake from this company, but I do believe that she has pricing info on her website: thecakestudio.net

I am doing cupcakes also to save a bit of money as I have found that they are cheaper than a cake and actually are becoming more popular!

I'm using Bella Luna.  We found a flavor with her that we loved and couldn't be beat.  $4-4.50 per serving with no upcharge for decoration which is nice.  She also has cupcakes for $2.50.
Anita was booked so we didn't get a chance to try her out.  We also did a tasting with Enticing Icings and she ran a close second!

We're doing a vegan cake through Alice's Piece or cake with cupcakes from Pattycake Bakery. Pattycake was way too expensive to do a whole cake, but I HIGHLY recommend them.

We are going with  Cakes by Cecile. She has fantastic online reviews, which is good, but more importantly, her cake is amazing. We are going with her white chocolate and it is by far the best cake we've run into (besides Anita's, which we had at a Bat Mitzvah 16 years ago and would have gone with but she was booked just like for your wedding). I think it was 3.65 a person. She also does kitchen sheet cakes for much less too and she makes it the same height as the actual tiers on the real cake so no one knows that they're getting kitchen sheet cake. We found her when we were at the Vet's Memorial Bridal Show.

Suisse Shoppe is very good and Tremont Goodie Shop in North Arlington is also good but haven't had the wedding cake tasting yet.  Not sure how the prices compare
