Letting a dress out

I still have some time and hopefully won't have to worry about it BUT...

I got my dress through David's Bridal.  When I tried it on, it's super tight.  Being strapless, it of course gives me that back roll that strapless does.  And breathing is doable, but not super comfy.  So I set on a mission to lose some weight/inches.  I have lost some and have some more to go.  But my question is, how much can a dress be let out if needed?  Is this something that depends on the dress or is it standard that a wedding dress can be let out a certain number of inches?

  • I think it generally depends on the dress. DB should be able to tell you for your exact dress. Are you wearing anything underneath when you try it on? Spanx or a longline bra can take off some inches too.

  • Good point.  I wasn't expecting to try it on so soon, so I did not have appropriate undergarments on.  I will have those by the fitting though, so I guess I will know more then.

  • This definitely depends on the dress, I would speak with them at your next fitting and find out what your parameters are with that dress specifically.
  • I was in the same boat with my David's Bridal dress. When I first bought the dress the one I had tried on was super tight! But the lady said no prob they would order a size up and then I could always get it taken in, I was planning on losing weight anyways. When my dress came in it was STILL super tight! Turns out they messed up and ordered me the smaller size! I didn't do anything about it though mostly because I had such a BAD experince with them that I never wanted to have to deal with them again. So now I'm just really hoping that I can lose the weight I want.
  • You can normally let out most dresses up to one size.  If your gown has a lot of beading/detail around the bodice, my understanding is that the amount of fabric available to "let it out", will be quite a bit less than other, more simple designs.  The more intricate the design work, the less they like to sew into the seams.
  • I am going through the exact same thing.  I also bought my dress through david's bridal.  It fits but it's tight and I want to be comfortable.  The david's bridal associate said that they can let the dress out up to 2 sizes.  I'm seriously hoping it doesn't come to that.
  • Doesn't DB let you exhange it for another size? We should have time- still 4 months to go.

Not that I'm aware of. When I bought mine the lady pretty much said "once it's bought that's it" And quite frankly I didn't want to because of such a bad experince the first time. I would definately not recommend David's Bridal to anyone!
