HELP ordering vs. sewing

hey yall

so my wedding is in august and i havent gotten my dress yet...im still trying to figure out which route will be cost-friendly (since $$ is an issue). A friend of my who is getting married a week after me suggested that she would like to sew her dress...now i think for some reason that this is really tricky and might end up costing more...HELP me!!! who have done this or is considering this in the DC/MD metro area...

I love to sew, but I wouldn't touch my wedding dress with a 10' pole.  Even purchasing everything on sale it would cost me just as much if not more to create the dresses I've been looking at at DB and some of the more affordable designers - not to mention my time.

  • If cost is an issue, you may not want to make your dress.  It is not necessarily less expensive than buying, although it can be if you make something very simple.  I spent about $900 making my DD's dress, not including the class on making a bridal dress I took, nor the cost of the many fabric and lace samples.  Still, that was about 1/4 of the price (at full price, from a salon) of dresses of comparable materials and workmanship, and about 1/2 the price of the Watters dress I copied for the style.  It took about 6 months of planning and shopping for fabric and lace, and about one month to construct (while working full time),
The main reason to handmake a wedding dress is for the pleasure of making it, not cost.  It meant a lot to my DD that I made her dress.
  • Thanks yall!!
I am not the one sewing the dress...i cant sew worth a lick!....lol
I was just considering the option of ordering a dress vs. using a tailor...You all have been very helpful..I think my mind's made up..I will order my dress!!

  • I am having a simple, second wedding (outdoors, in a local state park, in front of a waterfall with the reception in my parents yard), and am sewing my own dress from a very simple pattern, in white eyelet.  I am also sewing my daughter's flowergirl dress from the same white eyelet, and making my jr. bridesmaid's dress. This is very important to me this time around.
