photographer

I know I have a year til my weding, but I'm already looking into photographers and having a hard time. Any tips?? Whats the normal amount for a deposit with the wedding being so far away??

Re: photographer

  • In my area it's pretty normal to start booking photographers now. They usually get booked about a year in advance. Not sure what a normal deposit would be. I think we paid 500.00 but this could vary regionally.

One year until your wedding isn't considered "early". Some people book vendors for their wedding 2 or 3 years in advance.

The deposit is usually the same no matter when you book. My photographers deposit was about $1000.

Tips for finding a photographer: Look at their websites and find one that has the "feel" and style that you'd want your pictures to have. Then look at how much they charge and see if it's in your price range. Bridal shows are good for finding photographers too. That's where I found mine.
  • Here photogs book a year plus out. My deposit was 1/3. I first looked at recommendations from my local board, then looked at the photographers web sites to see which were my style, I emailed them for prices and narrowed it down to those whose styles I liked with in my budget. Then I looked for reviews on weddingwire.com. After I made sure they did not have serious issues I booked meetings and went with the one who we felt most comfortable.

My suggestion is photographers who own their own company and it is just them. Otherwise they can show you pictures that one person shot that are good and then send someone not good the day of the wedding. In my area not many good photographers go to bridal shows.

  • My photographer didnt need a deposit he just made up sign a binding contract that states if we dont cancel 3 months in advance we have to pay half of the cost! But i've heard 500  is typical!
  • i started by going to local bridal shows an dmeeting with soem-cause you can get a few out of the way and see their albums and meet them.  I also asked my venue for reccomendations.  we just started booking appoitnemtns now.  but post on you local board and they should help you get more of a starting point cause i was also overwhelmed with starting to  pick one

  • All good suggestions for sources!!  I also looked for someone I clicked with, this person is going to be following you around all day on your special day, you should like them!

I actually ended up going with a photographer I found on The Knot vendor list, our deposit was $400 which I thought was pretty reasonable.

  • The photographers around here require between 500-1200. As long as it's not half the contract price, it should be reasonable.

  • I looked on craigslist for some freelance photgraphers. A lot of them in my area have facebook or their own websites and I really like their approach. And they are mostly under 700, and as for deposits, it was just a contract that they ask for.

  • Yeah, around my area some photographers can get booked well over a year in advance.  So I would say start looking now.  Every photographer is different on the deposit.  Mine wanted 20% of the total amount.
  • i knew exactly which photog i wanted, so we booked about 14 months out from the wedding and put a 1000 deposit down ...i think that is about standard.
