HELP looking for a church

We are looking to get married in a church.. I am not religious but it means a lot to my fiance.. Any pointers on what kind of churches are out there that will mayy you with one of us not being religious.

Re: HELP looking for a church

  • You really need to discuss this with your fiancé. If it really does mean a lot to him, then he probably would like a specific church or at least a denomination. If he doesn't care which, you need to examine why he thinks you need to get married in a church. If, for instance, it's just to please his family, it's probably not a great reason. If neither of you are going to attend church while married, I see no reason to have your wedding in one.

That said, Unitarian Universalist is probably your best bet. Most churches may still want you to attend pre-marital sessions, which are frankly a good idea for anyone.

  • Agree with artbyallie. If being married in a church is important to your FI, but not to you, then he should probably be the one looking for the church, not you. There are many many churches out there with different beliefs and approaches to life and religion. What if you pick out one with no meaning to him or with whose beliefs he disagrees?
If your FI doesn't have a church or doesn't have one where you are getting married, he'll start with the denomination. From there, he can check out the local churches and their pastors/priests. Your religious preference may or may not make a difference; it depends on the denomination and religious leader. If his chosen denomination says no, check out the UUs.
