Is anyone else using haybales for seating

I love this idea. But I dont know where to start. How many should i get for 150 people? Do you think i can resale them afterwards? Does anyone have a lot of experience with haybales/strawbales and have advice for me? I heard they hold a lot of bugs. eww

    No, but I considered it.  Hay is really expensive right now though.  Like, $20 a bale expensive.  A bale is probably about 4 feet long, so you could comfortably seat only a couple of adults on one.  Plus, you would NEVER want to just have people sit on the actual hay/straw, as it is really really scratchy, and a lot of people are allergic (if I sat on Timothy hay, I'd have a rash instantly).  So you'd have to cover it with blankets or canvas, or another thick material.
    If you do choose to go this route, you MAY be able to re-sell it, if you will want to, buy good quality and don't let it get wet.  You could use straw & it is cheaper, but will be much harder to re-sell (since animals don't eat it).  The Grange in Issaquah carries both, as do most any feed stores.  If you have a decent-sized guest list though, you may want to call ahead to make sure they have enough there for you (bigger quantities are usually bought by the ton & come on a big truck!).  HTH!

    Oh, and I wouldn't worry about bugs.  Hay is pretty clean.  I'd worry about the scratchiness/allergens more.  Personally, even though it'd be super cute, I wouldn't do it.

    The allergry part scares me.  I am so deathly allergic to hay, I wouldn't even be able to sit on top of the blanket! 

    Cute idea tho..

    I'm using hay bales for seating.  Luckily, our venue has a barn for the horses and have them on site so we don't have to pay. :)  A standard hay bales dimensions are 40" x 15".  We found you can seat 2 per bale.  We are having our bales covered in fabric.  They're actually polyester tablecloths the venue is ordering for us.  I think as long as you cover them, you will be ok.  I also some cute pics of "hay couches" where 2 hay bales are used.  It's very cute.  Just google hay bale seating under pics and see what comes up.
