After the wedding

Does anyone have plans to make a will or something? Is that something we should do?

Re: After the wedding

  • We haven't made plans to but I definitely think it's something you should do. FI's dad died 2 years ago and we weren't able to find a will. It took until about a month ago to finally get everything sorted out.

Obviously it will be less complicated for you guys until you have kids but you just never know. After living through two years of frustration and guilt at not knowing what to do I realize how important it really is.

  • I actually asked my parents about that before.  It's good to have whenever you have large assets, be it real estate, $, etc, but especially important if you have dependents.  We'll probably make one within a year of the wedding but not rushing into it.  I think it usually costs a few hundred $$s for the legal fees, if I'm not mistaken.

  • FI and I were just talking about that!  We decided we would discuss it in April, once we made it through the wedding!

  • I know it's something we will do (no pun intended lol) but it isn't anything we've really talked about.  I know FI has a will right now that leaves everything to his sister but once we get married he will change it over to me.  So if something happens to one of  us, the other spouse will automatically get everything.
  • Oh my gosh, I hadn't even thought about that! Ugggh. We'll definitely probably do one though within a year or so after the wedding, definitely when we have kids if not sooner.

  • Definitely doing a will.  Just getting eachother named as POD beneficiaries on our bank accounts this week, but waiting for everything else until after the wedding (insurance, credit cards).  I also suggest everyone consider a healthcare power of attorney -- not necessarily naming their spouse, but indicating who is responsible for what sorts of decisions in the event of your incapacity.
  • FI has one already, because of his job..and I have one because of my kids..it isn't hard to complete..but for me, it was scary..just the whole idea of preparing for my boys future in the event, I'm not here...and it also brought my own mortality into perspective...but I know that FI and I will update them after the wedding..

  • In Indiana you don't need a will unless you want your assests to go to someone other than your spouse or you have children. I had one drawn up after my divorce because of my daughter.
  • It is a good idea for each of you to have a life insurance poilcy with the spouse as the beneficiary in an amount that will cover a funeral, any of your debts and your house. That's what I was told the first time I was married.
  • We will be updating FI's military stuff to go to myself and then we are sitting down with someone and writing up our will's. It's a scary thing but it's definitely something that needs to get done and I would much rather take care of that now, than take care of it right before a deployment - emotions run super high then. So. But in reality of it all, everything will go to my FI and in the case that he isn't here it will go to my parents. I plan on updating it once we have kids and then we will figure out those things then.

I think I was just assuming it was something I'd do once I had kids. But it'd be nice to get it done beforehand so we don't have to hunk about ourselves dying at such a happy time like having kids.
