How long to have the photographer...

I am trying to figure out my timeline for my wedding and im trying to gage how long to have my photographer. so here is my question:

If i have dinner (buffet style 275 people-give take) at 6pm.. when would you do grand march and then the first dances?

And second how long would you have the photographer there after those are done?

We had ours for 10 hours. Our wedding wasnt unil 4:30 but they came at 11 to take pic of us getting ready, and we did a "reveal" and all of our bridal party pics before the ceremony. Ceremony and reception were in one place so they were there through cocktail hour, some dancing and dinner and then left after the cake cutting..around 9:00. The last hour and a half of the reception was without the photographer. I think it workd out well.

I had mine for 8+ hours--from getting ready to the very end of the night.  She even came up to our hotel room with us (pic in my siggy).  I had never heard of letting the photographer go early until I came on TK.

I don't know what a grand march is, and we did our first dance as soon as we were announced, before dinner started so I can't help with those.

I had mine for 4 hours, and they were good with "staging" lots of shots like a staged cake cutting, staged getting ready shots, and that kept my budget under control and allowed for me to get a really strong 6 hours of shooting done.  We had a great reveal session, plenty of time for the ceremony and the dances, bouquet, etc.  And if you talk to a photographer, they can give you some insight into how these things can be balanced to make it all work within your budget.

The big thing is this:   If you're on a budget, would you rather have 10 hours of mediocre photography, or 4 hours of exceptional photography?  That's how we made our decision.  The most important pics to us were the ones of the two of us.  Sure, we got plenty of the family pics, traditional stuff, ceremony, reception, etc. But nobody hangs a giant pic of their cake cutting on their wall.  Nobody puts a big pic of everyone dancing on their wall.  It's more about you and your guy and that's what you'll cherish when it's all over.

    Best of luck

Mine is only charging us for her basic package of 6 hours, but she'll probably be there for 10. She's cutting us a deal because she's doing our e-pics and she did my cousin's senior pics. She said she would stay through all the important things at the very least: bouquet toss, cake cutting and all that, but I told her she was welcome to stay and party with us.
