Riviera Maya

Just booked my honeymoon! We are super excited! Has anyone been to the Riviera Maya? Any ideas for fun activities!!

Re: Riviera Maya

  • Great to see another person from Omaha!
Yes! Lots of us have. There is a ton of things to do in the Riviera Maya region of Mexico.

What Resort are you staying at?
There is almost a neverending list of things to do in that region.
Playa Del Carmen is pretty awesome. The shop keepers and others are very forceful though so make sure you can say No very forcefully. They also have a Walmart if you want to pick up cheap souveneirs or some food or supplies. Silly I know, but their prices were like 1/3 to 1/4 what our gift shop at the resort was selling them for.

My favorite was Xel-Ha. It wasn't overly touristy like Xplor or Xcaret. (Although both of those were fun!).
They have a lot of things to do and it includes all the drinks and food you can eat all day. Pretty neat.

You can relax on the beach or take a ferry over to Cozumel. They have Parasailing and cenote swimming.
Xplor is fun for adventerous people because it has Zip Lines and dune buggies and swimming through underground caves. It is really cool.

Really though it depends on what you are looking for. There is a ton of History in the area as well from Tulum all the way up to Cancun there are little Mayan villages and ruins. Tons of stuff to see.

    Good luck!

  • yes I have been (12 times over the past 10 years). What would you like to know? What are you looking for in particular-adventure? culture? culinary? water sports? nature? shopping? where are you staying and for how long and during what time of year? anything you want to avoid?

  • We loved Xel-Ha and Xplor. I wish we had had more time at Tulum, because you can go swimming there and that would have been awesome (I only had time to stand in the water). Chichen-Itza was impressive!

We just got back from the Riviera Maya for our destination wedding in November in Playa del Carmen and I've got an entry in my travel blog specifically on sightseeing/tours here.
  • I really enjoyed Tulum, Copan, and Chichen Itza (its a long bus ride, but so amazingly worth it). Its truly amazing to see what such an old civiliation could accomplish so long ago.

  • We are staying at the royal playa del carmen. We are really excited. I want to try, and do something fun each day. Has anyone been to the caves? The mayan villages and ruins sound like a lot of fun! This will be our first time in Mexico! Has anyone gone deep sea fishing? We were thinking about doing that one day!

I'll address 'something fun each day' first.  Many many of the things you're asking for are far from the resort. If you wnat to take a day trip each day that's cool, but you'll have no time relaxing. example-assume a 2 hour ride to get out to fish at minimum-then 3 hours fishing, 2 hours back. You're already at 3pm if you leave at 8am. that being said-by caves do you mean cenotes? if so yes-they're all over the place. there are no above ground rivers on the yucatan peninsula. all of the rivers are underground which make the cenotes. there are tons and tons of ruin sites. chichen itza and tulum are most popular but also the most touristy. coba and ek balam are less crowded, less 'tourist friendly' and less of a tourist suck than the others.
mayan villages. the ones visited are old style mayan basically for tourist revenue. they're still fun.
alltournative.com does great day trips. they have a mayan encounter that was very good. your resort will also have a list of available day trips. yes-the deep sea fishing there is fabulous. we've gone a few times.   if you go though there are a few things to think about-what to do with the fish. if you can bring it back to your resort's chef and have him cook it upu for you great-but if not it's a waste. you can't bring it home and you dont want to just fish, kill it and then not eat it. you need to make sure you have a plan when you get back to the resort. we've had the chef at our resort cook up 2 large yellowtail that i caught and it fed the 10 of us really well-and there were still left overs. Consider a catch and release trip if you have no plan for what to do with the fish.
please bring biodegradable sunscreen. the regular stuff kills the coral.
