First Kitchen

So I am moving out of the dorms and into my first apartment. What things do I have to buy food wise? I already have the equipment (pots and pans, ect.). I really want to have a good base for cooking. Thank You

Re: First Kitchen

  • How exciting! I looved having my own kitchen in my first place. Isn't it nice to actually be able to cook something that's not macaroni and cheese?

    For stocking up I'd suggest:
    vegetable oil
    olive oil
    baking powder
    salt
    pepper
    cinammon
    oregano
    basil
    garlic
    lemon juice
    flour
    yeast
    white sugar
    brown sugar
    cornstarch
    tomato sauce/paste
    vinegar
    chicken/beef stock

Those are some basic staples. Really, I think the best way to stock a kitchen is just to start cooking things you like, and buy the ingredients as needed. Then you'll have them!

  • When FI & I moved in together we didn't have ANYTHING in the kitchen so we a have just brought the ingredients as we've needed it...now we pretty much have everything we need & then some.
  • I would also get rice, pasta, and canned tomatoes, then you can always make pasta for dinner without going out and getting something.

  • How exciting for you!

For the first few weeks in our apartment, we didn't have ANYTHING. I can't tell you how many times I sent my poor BF to the store to get something basic. However, we did accumulate things we needed after some time. My advice is to just buy very basic things.. salt, pepper, oil, sugar, cooking spray, butter, ketchup, ect.  If you plan on making an elaborate meal that week, then pick up some other kind of spice when you go to the grocery store.
