Last Name??

Just wondering what everyone will be doing in regards to taking FI last name , hyphenating , or just keeping their name...

Personally I am hyphenating mine. I have a 13 year old. We have had the same last name he has my last name and he does not want to change it and I am fine with that but because he doesn't want to change his I do not want to completely change mine. So hypehenating is the most logical to me

Btw he came to me with his decision to not change his name before I even had the chance to ask him. Like I said I am totally fine with it, I figure he is of the age that he can make the choice and I wouldn't force him to change his name

I am changing my last name completely; I love my maiden name, but I'm ready for a change. Our son already carries FI's family name and I'm ready to fit in lol.

a<a href="http://www..." rel="nofollow">www...</a> my son had my name because I had him when I was 17 AND his "father" is not and has never been around - my dad is kind of happy that he doesn't want to change his name though because at this rate my brother will never settle down - so there will be no one to carry on the family name if my son changed his - either way it's all good to me

Lol I see your dad's point! My dad wanted me to give my son our last name because he doesn't have any sons, but I fought that one off

. I also get why you gave your kiddo your last name - if FI had not been completely dedicated to me/him/us, son wouldn't have his name either.

I will change mine to FI's. My son has his dads last name so no point in keeping mine. I wish that his dad would let us change his so we would all have the same but I know he won't let us. I'm fine with that though.

My FI has already expressed he wants me to take his last name. While I do love my own last name it would be way too much to hypenate it (mine has 8 letters and so does his). So I am just going to go with his.

I'm torn. Between keeping mine or taking his. I don't think I'll hypenate it.

FI really wants me to take his, but I've been mine for 31 years... I'm kind of partial to it (ie I identify with it)...

Also, since I'm in the medical field, there's several licenses across several states I'll need to change...

Still need to get use to the idea I guess

I HATE my last name (it's a food... if you look at my username you can probably figure it out!) and I can't WAIT to change it! Hah!

That's funny! I always wonder about sn's and how they translate to real life.

I'm the only person in the US with my name, which is another reason I'm gung-ho. I hate being found and identified (if I need you, I'll come to you!), and while my first name is still fairly unique, there is more than one of my firstname newlastname's out there. Works for me!

I would have to update my certification info and all that which can take forever I hear CST but I guess it will get changed either way. ANd since I have still yet to find a job using that certification it can take however long it wants to get changed

I'm changing mine. When my brother got married, he married a woman with the same first name as myself. So, basically I'm sick of being referred to my name and #1 to tell us apart. I welcome the change!! And my current last name is very rare whereas my new last name will be Miller. I'm all for it.

I'm keeping mine. I was back and forth for awhile. At first FI was adamant that I take his. He thought it was weird I wouldn't want to. But my last name is unique and I'm attached to it. Eventually FI realized that it wasn't a big deal and that made my doubts go away since I knew I wouldn't be hurting him with my decision. We've agreed that if we decide to have kids they will have his last name because he is an only child and there's no one to pass on his last name.

I'm taking my FI's last name. I'll miss my last name for sure (it's easy to say and spell whereas his is not) but if we have kids, I want us all to have the same last name.

I'm taking his last name. What sucks is that my user name at work will not change and so students won't be able to find me by FI's last name. Oh well, more work for me

My maiden name will become my middle name and I'll take his last name. (No hyphen.)

I will be taking FI name. I teach elementary school and my last name is hard for students to say to it is just one more reason to change it.

I am totally rocking the FI's last name. I may do like my mama and use my maiden as my middle name but both mine and his are super long so I may just lose mine altogether (even though I ADORE my last name). I am already starting to practice signing it.

I'm changing my name. My FI's name sounds a lot better with my first and middle name than my maiden name. Not to mention he made it very clear that he wants me to take his. It's important to him and to me to keep tradition as much as we can. Plus I want to match our children when we have them.
